Auditions: "Jesus Christ Superstar

Callbacks (by invitation only) Wednesday, February 4th @ 7pm

The Road Company is looking for non-equity actors for its upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar (A small stipend will be paid based on opening night sales.)

Auditions for Jesus Christ Superstar at The Road Company Theatre will take place on Sunday, February 1st and Monday February 2nd with Callbacks on Wednesday, February 4th at 405 S Main Street, Williamstown NJ, 08094. Please complete and submit this form prior to your attendance at the audition.

Rehearsals will begin February 8th, 2026.

Rehearsal Days:

Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays

Please Note: There may be daily rehearsals from April 12, 2026. There may be a few Tuesday or Thursday nights in lieu of a regularly scheduled night.

WHAT TO PREPARE:

Auditions are in person, and you must prepare at least 32 bars of a song from the show or in the style of the show to show off your vocal range and belt. (You may sing a song from the show.) Be prepared to dance as well.

SYNOPSIS:

The first musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber to be produced for the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for over 50 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life.

The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

Jesus Christ - Male - 20-35 – Rock Tenor (A2–G5) - Title role, leader of the twelve disciples, called the "Son of God" and the "King of the Jews." Jesus has a difficult time accepting his fate without answers on why he must die. This role requires an actor that can show Leadership, Confusion, Strength, Vulnerability and Optimism, often at the same time.

Judas Iscariot - Male - 20-40 – Rock Tenor (D3–D5) - One of the twelve apostles of Jesus; concerned for the poor and the consequences of Jesus's fame. Judas believes in Jesus's teaching but has started to grow weary of those in power coming after him and his followers. The role requires an actor that can show Frustration, Yearning, Weakness, Dismay and Pessimism, often at the same time.

Mary Magdalene - Female - 20-35 - Mezzo-Soprano, Beautiful Belter (F3–E♭5) - A female follower of Jesus who finds herself falling in love with him. The role requires an actress that can show Grace, Stability, Weakness and Compassion.

Pontius Pilate - Male - 30-50 – Baritenor (A2–B4) - Governor of Judea who foresees the events of Jesus's crucifixion from beginning to aftermath in a dream and finds himself being presented with that very situation. The role requires an actor that can show Authority, Rage, Fragility, and Fear.

Caiaphas - Male - 30-50 – Low Bass / Rocky Top (C♯2–F4) - One of the main antagonists of the show. High priest who sees Jesus as a threat to the nation. He is a man in power who fears losing that power to Jesus. This role requires an actor that can show Anger, Power, and Angst.

Annas - Male or Female - 20-40 – High Baritone / Baritenor / Countertenor (G2–D5)
-One of the main antagonists of the show. Fellow priest at the side of Caiaphas who is persuaded by Caiaphas into seeing Jesus as a threat. Annas can seem more conniving than Caiaphas. This role requires an actor/actress that can show Disgust, Displeasure, and Loathing

Peter Simon - Male - 20-40 – High Baritone / Baritenor (A2–G4) - One of Jesus's twelve apostles; denies Jesus three times upon the night of Jesus's arrest to save himself. Peter is obsessed with impatience. This role requires an actor that can show Tenacity, Worry, Impatience, and Regret.
