Demonstrates knowledge of the proper application of aseptic techniques in dressing change and removal of sutures or staples. Efficiently and effectively assists with the application and/or removal of plaster/fiberglass casts, sutures, clips, pins or other orthopedic devices or equipment. Articulates descriptions of orthopedic conditions based upon a basic understanding of anatomical structures and their relationship with one another.
ResponsibilitiesThe Orthopaedic Specialist (certified/registered) provides a broad spectrum of advanced clinical expertise and direct patient care within the orthopaedic and sports medicine specialties in ambulatory practices and hospital coverage. The registered specialist mentors and precepts new hires and those pursuing credentials as a registered or certified orthopaedic specialist. Responsibilities include casting, bracing, DME, wound care, suture/staple removal, supply ordering and inventory, equipment care, application and adjustment of casts and soft goods, and assisting medical staff with orthopaedic procedures.
The specialist promotes patient education and safety, enhances customer satisfaction, and demonstrates understanding of resource utilization. Duties also involve patient interaction, training patients to use walking aids, documentation of physician orders, inventory maintenance, patient rooming, coordination of on‑going education, and performing administrative tasks such as in‑basket management, telephone communication, medical record documentation, insurance and disability forms, precertification, authorizations, and scheduling follow‑ups.
The role requires maintaining credentials as a Registered Orthopaedic Specialist or Orthopaedic Specialist Certified.

License/Certification RequirementsCompletion of a Certified Orthopedic Technology or Registered Orthopedic Specialist training program preferred. Completion of an accredited medical assistant program with 1‑year direct supervision of Orthopedic Surgeon. U.S. Armed Forces Military Medical Core experience. Special Considerations: U.S. Armed Forces Medical Core – ability to enroll and take Registered Orthopedic Specialist exam less than 1 year of employment.
