Marine Biologist - Barnegat Light, NJ

A.IS. Inc. is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities that require certification of compliance with environmental regulations. We collect data for federal, state, municipal, and other government agencies along the U.S. coastline. We are recruiting Marine Biologists (Fisheries Observers) to work at sea, collecting and recording data and biological samples for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) aboard commercial fishing vessels.

• Record detailed information on gear and fishing activity of vessels ranging from 20' to 100' in size.
• Collect data on fish catch, discard, incidental takes (marine mammals, seabirds, marine turtles) during 7‑14 day deployments.
• Attend a 3‑week paid training (03/15/2026 – 04/03/2026) administered in person in Falmouth, MA.
• Participate in sampling protocols, gear assessment, fish identification, marine mammal/sea‑turtle identification, and safety procedures.
• Handle heavy lifting, work odd hours, and endure long days in rough seas.
• Demonstrate physical fitness and mental readiness for extended deployments offshore.

• Starting pay: $20.25/hour (+ $4.57/hour for the first 40 hours worked each week if enrolled in H&W benefit).
• Total annual earnings: $35,000 – $55,000, dependent on deployment and sea‑day accomplishments.
• Minimum 12 hours paid per calendar day offshore; additional compensable activity eligible while on land.

• Additional compensation: data‑quality bonus, service awards, fitness‑center reimbursement, referral bonus.
• Travel reimbursed at hourly rate, plus mileage compensation for personal vehicle and government per‑diem.

• Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology or Biology with 30 credits of biology coursework and 6 credits of marine science.
• At least one undergraduate course in math or statistics.
• Experience with data entry on computers.
• U.S. citizens or legal authorization to work in the U.S.
• Physically able to perform biologist duties (documented by a licensed physician).
• Own transportation required.
• Commit to the program for at least one year.

• At‑sea experience.
• Coursework in dichotomous keys.

• Must currently live or be willing to live within 50 miles of Barnegat Light, NJ.
