Position Overview:
The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides direct instruction and support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing across a range of content areas. The teacher works collaboratively with general and special education staff to ensure student access to curriculum and to promote academic, language, and social-emotional development.
- Provide instruction tailored to the individual needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, specialists, and families to support student learning and communication access
- Implement and adapt curriculum materials to ensure accessibility in all content areas
- Use a variety of communication methods (e.g., sign language, spoken language, cued speech, written communication) based on student needs
- Monitor and document student progress, adjusting instruction accordingly
- Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to the development of individualized education plans
- Supervise and provide direction to assigned aides and volunteers
- Stay current with best practices in deaf education and inclusive teaching
- Perform other duties as assigned by administration
Required:
- Valid Connecticut teaching certification in 057 (Comprehensive Special Education) or 058 (Teaching Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing)
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, families, and staff in diverse educational settings
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Experience working in inclusive and/or multilingual learning environments
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or other communication methods used by students
