Job Description

General Scope of Duties

The Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in all sport-related duties. This role is responsible for supporting the women’s swimming programs in alignment with College, departmental, conference NESCAC, and NCAA Division III standards and policies.

General Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in conducting a program that aligns with the mission and philosophy of Connecticut College, the department, NESCAC, and NCAA Division III.
  • Prepare student-athletes for competition by planning for and conducting a regular schedule of fitness training, sport skill practices, scouting and competitions within NESCAC and NCAA regulations.
  • Conduct oneself with the highest ethical and moral standards in regard to behavior on campus and in relationships with student-athletes and members of the campus community.
  • Plan and execute dynamic warm-ups and cool-downs, practices, and competitive events.
  • Maintain the highest ethical and professional standards in interactions with student-athletes and the campus community.
  • Ensure a safe environment for all practices, competitions, and team travel.
  • Comply with all applicable rules and policies (College, department, NESCAC, NCAA).
  • Support fundraising initiatives by engaging alumni and parents.
  • Monitor and support student-athlete’s overall well-being.
  • Assist with individual meetings with student-athletes for performance and development.
  • Maintain strong relationships with team alumni and families.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends during the season and for recruitment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and be able to drive a 15-passenger vehicle.

  • Work Location:

    This is an on-campus position and your office is located in the athletic center. Regular attendance at work is an essential job function.
  • Remote Work:
    Not permitted for full-time assistant coaches.
  • Calendar Management:
    Maintain an updated Google Calendar reflecting all practices, competitions, recruiting, vacations, and PTO. The calendar must be shared with all athletic directors.
Education and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Knowledge of NCAA and NESCAC rules.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and effective communication skills.
  • Highest ethical standards regarding sportsmanship, integrity, and professionalism.
Preferred Qualifications
  • collegiate level experience in collegiate swimming and diving competition preferred.
Physical Demands

Standing and Walking: Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time on the pool deck during practices and competitions.

Swimming and Demonstration: Must have the ability to demonstrate swimming techniques and assist swimmers in and out of the pool when necessary.

Lifting and Carrying: Must be able to lift, move, and carry equipment such as lane lines, kickboards, timing systems, and other swim-related materials (typically up to 50 pounds).

Bending, Reaching, and Stooping: Required to bend, reach, and stoop frequently to adjust equipment, assist athletes, or retrieve items around the pool area.

Environmental Conditions
  • Must be able to tolerate humid and warm pool environments.
  • May be exposed to wet and slippery surfaces.
  • Must be able to work both indoors (pool facility) and outdoors during meets or training as needed.

Hearing and Communication: Must have the ability to project voice and communicate clearly in a loud pool environment to athletes, staff, and spectators.

Visual Requirements: Must have sufficient vision to observe swimmers both in and out of the water to ensure safety and proper technique.

Emergency Response: Must possess the physical capability to enter the water quickly and perform water rescues or first aid if necessary.
