Opportunity Statement

How is UWC-USA unique?

Founded in 1982, the United World College-USA is one of 18 United World College (UWC) campuses worldwide and the only campus in the United States. The UWC movement seeks "to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future." Our participation in the UWC movement and our philanthropy-based educational model distinguish UWC-USA among international boarding schools.

What is the Bartos Institute?

Since its founding as an endowed institute at UWC-USA in 2000, the Bartos Institute has promoted the practice of Constructive Engagement of Conflict (CEC) within UWC-USA and among school partners. UWC-USA increasingly recognizes that building a peaceful world through CEC is deeply connected to its concern for building a sustainable future. For this reason, the school has reimagined the Bartos Institute as a home for both its CEC and Sustainability initiatives.

The reorganized Bartos Institute serves as the campus center for mission praxis, focused on our core practices of CEC and Sustainability (within an integral framework). The Institute fulfills four main functions:
1) it grounds students in theory, equips them with foundational skills and leads them into direct practice through the various programs that the Bartos team delivers;
2) it supports the Academic and Student Life curricula as they engage our core practices;
3) it partners with the schools' operations departments as they align with mission; and
4) develops the sharing of our most impactful work with local, regional, national and global stakeholders.

What is the role?

The Senior Director is an educator who organizes the Bartos team, oversees the ongoing development of its internal and external programs/activities, ensures the timely coordination and implementation of all programs/activities and leads on the development of new initiatives. The Bartos team includes the Director of Co-curricular Learning, Director of Expeditionary Learning, Bartos Programs Specialist, and Global Leadership Forum Coordinator.

As the Bartos Institute begins to broaden its scope in 2026-27, the Senior Director works closely with the Bartos team to build coherence across its programs/activities; communicates the Institute's new vision, philosophy and principles to all stakeholders; sees that all programming is delivered in such a way that reinforces Bartos's new institutional role; and collaborates with the Associate Head to prioritize new initiatives for development and implementation.

As the lead Bartos administrator, the Senior Director manages the Institute's staff, policies/procedures, budget and calendar, and contributes to advancement efforts on behalf of the Institute. In addition to leading, administering and supervising, the Senior Director often plans, organizes and delivers programs/activities for students, employees and external stakeholders.

Working across all programming and in partnership with operations, the Senior Director promotes and contributes to an integrated student and employee experience. The Senior Director fulfills their responsibilities in accord with the UWC mission and values as well as the school's strategic plan, foundational documents, IBDP authorization, ISAS accreditation and best practices in experiential education.
