Position Summary
UNM‑Taos Humanities Department invites applicants for temporary part‑time (adjunct) faculty positions to teach lower‑division courses in second languages such as Spanish, Signed Language Interpreting, and other second languages. Salary ranges from $1,017.60 to $1,100.63 per credit hour depending on the candidate’s education.
Positions are hired on an as‑needed basis based on student enrollment, course offering matrix, and graduation requirements. The specific courses include, but are not limited to, the following:
- SPAN 1110. Spanish I (3) – Designed for students with little exposure to Spanish, this introductory course develops basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and intercultural competence at the Novice level based on ACTFL guidelines. Meets UNM Second Language Requirement.
- SPAN 1210. Spanish for Heritage Learners (3) – A beginning‑level course for students with a cultural connection to Spanish, aiming to build upon existing skills and develop new proficiencies. By the end of the course students describe their home and campus surroundings and common activities, gaining cultural competency and critical understanding of their linguistic background. Meets UNM Second Language Requirement.
- SIGN 2125. Introduction to Signed Language (3) – Introductory course to American Sign Language and Deaf culture, covering vocabulary, conversational skills, linguistic features, narrative storytelling, and Deaf community issues. Meets UNM Second Language Requirement.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in the discipline or subfield in which they wish to teach.
- Completed a program of study at least one level above the courses to be taught (e.g., at least 18 graduate credit hours or equivalent experience).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Teaching experience at a post‑secondary institution, especially community college.
- Experience delivering instruction remotely.
- Native‑speaker fluency in the target language.
- Successful practice or fieldwork experience, if applicable.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, and experience working with broadly diverse communities.
