Overview

Educational Assistant – Special Education – Work Unit/

Hours:

7:45 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Union Status:
Union. Licensure:
Level III Educational Assistant.

Qualifications for candidacy include eligibility criteria for instructional support positions, such as passing scores on educator assessments or equivalent college coursework as described below.

Qualifications
  • Passing Score on Para Pro (457);
    or
  • Passing Score on Para Educator (70% in each section);
    or
  • Passing Score and completion of the Core Academic Skills for Educators:
    Reading, Writing, and Mathematics;
    or
  • Minimum of 48 semester hours of college credit from a regionally accredited college or university with 15 of those credits in language arts (3 hours), mathematics (3 hours), writing (3 hours), and reading, writing, math readiness, or professional education (6 hours);
    or
  • Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with 15 of those credits in language arts (3 hours), mathematics (3 hours), writing (3 hours), and reading, writing, math readiness, or professional education (6 hours).
Responsibilities
  • General Job Functions
    :
    To work closely with one or a few disabled pupils regularly to provide physical help and emotional support to gain maximum benefit from the district’s special education program.
  • Essential Job Functions
    :
  • Assists students in physical tasks such as moving between rooms and using the restroom.
  • Assists students with eating; under supervision of the special education teacher helps students complete school work.
  • Accompanies students outside the classroom for activities and field trips.
  • Establishes a supportive relationship with students while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Hears students read and guides them without teaching; greets students on arrival and accompanies them as needed.
  • Assists students in recreation, leisure activities, and instruction (e.g., swimming, bowling, field trips).
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Educational Support:
    Works with individuals and groups to reinforce learning; checks notebooks, assists with assignments, reads to students, and supports classroom activities.
  • Supervises students during drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips; alerts the teacher to concerns about students; assists in library or media center; helps students with attire.
  • Maintains ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.

    Serves as information resource to substitutes, operates instructional equipment, assists with classroom displays, handles money as needed, assists with snack/lunch/bathroom procedures, and participates in in-service training.
  • Specific Job Requirements
    :
    Excellent teamwork, willingness to accept delegated responsibilities, ability to work under occasional stress; familiarity with child restraining methods, first aid, and CPR (and able to use child restraints if necessary).

    :
    Demonstrates reliability, punctuality, proper attire, safety and ethical use of district resources.
