Zuni Language Teacher

Position: Zuni Native Language & Culture Instructor (Internal Applicants Only)

Reports to: District Bilingual Program Coordinator and Site Principal

Site: Site Specific

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Contract Length: 9-month

Salary: $50,833

Purpose

To provide classroom instruction in the Zuni language to meet the goals and objectives of the Zuni Public School District's State Bilingual Program. This job description outlines primary functions and responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate of Arts or Applied Science Degree; OR an equivalent combination of education experience.
  • Must have a NM Education Assistant License Level II (502);
  • Must have a NM Native American Language and Culture Certificate (520);
  • Have knowledge of Zuni culture, traditions, customs and language;
  • Experienced in computer operations with the ability to enter data, utilize interactive panels, Student Information System (SIS), Google programs and Microsoft Office programs;
  • Experienced in developing lessons using backwards planning, tracking information for progress monitoring and records management;
  • Must be fluent in the Zuni language and English language with the ability to communicate effectively with students both orally and in writing;
  • Must have skills in establishing and maintaining effective educational relationship with students;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Ability to participate in focused and reflective work ethics;
  • Clearly and accurately communicate with teachers, students, supervisors, and families;
  • Exhibit personal responsibility for daily work and attendance and personal appearance;
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from students, parents, peers and supervisors.
Essential Duties
  • Treat all students with dignity and respect;
  • Follow the directions of the school administrator and the bilingual program coordinator;
  • Provide direct instruction in the Zuni language to varying levels of students;
  • Implement the Zuni curriculum in alignment with the pacing guide of the curriculum;
  • Coordinate with other Zuni language instructors on assignments, tasks, projects and behavior as needed;
  • Ensure that required testing is done on a timely basis;
  • Manage multiple projects, schedules and student activities;
  • Plan, develop and implement instructional plans;
  • Reinforce academic behaviors to individual or small groups of students and monitor student progress;
  • Establish, model, practice and reinforce age-appropriate rules and logical consequences;
  • Maintain data charts and records related to student progress;
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organized classroom;
  • Provide immediate, corrective and/or positive feedback to students regarding behavior and/or academic performance;
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records, conversations, discussions and classroom information;
  • Maintain discipline in the classroom at all times;
  • Participate in required professional development opportunities and meetings;
  • Perform other duties as assigned on a timely basis.
Physical Functions
  • Frequently required to stand, talk, hear and sometimes walk and sit;
  • Occasionally required to lift up to 30 pounds, may lift up to 75 pounds with the help of another employee;
  • Hand and eye coordination in operating computer, interactive panel;
  • Usually works on even surfaces, may walk on uneven surfaces outdoors;
  • Exposed to various levels of noise (talking, assemblies, dance activities, etc.);
  • May work in close proximity to other individuals;
  • General vision, corrected to 20/20, reads a multitude of records, correspondence and data.
Mental Functions
  • Apply knowledge of current research and theory for language instruction;
  • Plan and implement lessons based on school and program objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned;
  • Read, analyze and interpret curriculum, test, evaluate bilingual material;
  • Translate the English and Zuni language for the purpose of student learning;
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written and oral form;
  • Work with students and parents in a way that will maintain their goodwill;
  • Respond appropriately to student behavior and discipline;
  • Respond appropriately to supervision and accept recommendations;
  • Communicate both orally and in writing in the Zuni and English language.
Essential Equipment
  • Equipment available for the job will include: interactive panels, projectors, copiers, phone, fax, calculator, printer, scanner, etc.
  • Large files, paper, office and related classroom supplies and materials.
