The Speech Pathologist is responsible for diagnosing and providing therapy for patients with disorders of communication and swallowing across the lifespan, including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, young adults, and adults. They plan, organize and coordinate care for all assigned cases. In consultation with other disciplines, they select outcome goals and skilled interventions, and effectively use agency and community resources to help patients and families achieve independence, including care in the patient’s residence.
Responsibilities- Delivers clinically appropriate evaluation and therapy services to patients who present with disorders of communication and swallowing.
- Evaluates and provides treatment for developmental disorders, clinical dysphagia, Modified Barium Swallow study, speaking valve and oral motor disorders.
- Ensures evaluations are timely and accurate.
- In consultation with other disciplines/professionals, selects outcome goals and skilled interventions.
- Uses agency and community resources to achieve patient and family independence, including care in the patient’s residence.
- Provides treatment to patients referred for Speech Therapy.
- Able to provide Speech Therapy services to patients with a variety of diagnoses.
- Uses appropriate strategies based on patient’s age, diagnosis, evidence, and best practice.
- Documents results of Speech Therapy services in the EMR.
- Documentation is completed within time frames designated by the hospital or program.
- Documentation and charges accurately reflect time spent with the patient.
- May supervise students, Clinical Fellows, therapy technicians, and volunteers.
- May take an active role in departmental or programmatic activities.
- Master s Degree in Speech Pathology
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support Health Care Provider
- Licensed Speech Therapy through the Louisiana Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
- Certification of Clinical Competency by ASHA within one year of hire for new graduates
