• Cast application, adjustment, and removal of casts, splints, and traction under the direct supervision of orthopedic providers.
• Observe patients for any skin integrity issues and report to the nurse, physician, or provider.
• Educate/assist with implementation of a plan of care in the areas of traction, casts & splints, and halo devices.

• Serve as a resource to nursing personnel when consulted concerning traction, modifications, and complications.
• Provide patients with written information regarding cast care.
• Educate on complications of plaster casts, causes, and treatments.
• Educate/assist nursing staff with use of Hoyer lifts for patient mobility and bed scales for accurate weights.
• Assist hospital Lift team with lifts and assist Patient transporters to move patients as needed.

• Order supplies and maintain supply levels.
• Maintain the cast room in a clean and orderly condition.
• Clean all equipment using proper technique.

• Appropriately charge for supplies and equipment.

• Assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room.

• Combination of appropriate education and work experience is required:
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• 1 year of experience in Orthopedics in a clinical/hospital setting preferred
• 2 years of work experience will be considered in lieu of education

• Basic Life Support Health Care Provider American Heart Association

• Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Must have basic training of the nursing assistant, medical corpsman and EMT training.
• Must be able to make judgments and decisions regarding patient care in a sometimes-distracting environment and with time constraints.
• Must set priorities to provide effective, efficient patient care, frequently under pressure of multiple activities.
• Knowledge and/or training of sterilization and infection control protocols.
