General Duties- Cast application, adjustment, and removal of casts, splints, and traction under the direct supervision of orthopedic providers.
- Observe patients for any skin integrity issues and report to the nurse, physician, or provider.
- Educate/assist with implementation of a plan of care in the areas of traction, casts & splints, and halo devices.
- Serve as a resource to nursing personnel when consulted concerning traction, modifications, and complications.
- Provide patients with written information regarding cast care.
- Educate on complications of plaster casts, causes, and treatments.
- Educate/assist nursing staff with use of Hoyer lifts for patient mobility and bed scales for accurate weights.
- Assist hospital Lift team with lifts and assist Patient transporters to move patients as needed.
- Order supplies and maintain supply levels.
- Maintain the cast room in a clean and orderly condition.
- Clean all equipment using proper technique.
- Appropriately charge for supplies and equipment.
- Assist orthopedic surgeons in the operating room.
- Combination of appropriate education and work experience is required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 1 year of experience in Orthopedics in a clinical/hospital setting preferred
- 2 years of work experience will be considered in lieu of education
- Basic Life Support Health Care Provider American Heart Association
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Must have basic training of the nursing assistant, medical corpsman and EMT training.
- Must be able to make judgments and decisions regarding patient care in a sometimes-distracting environment and with time constraints.
- Must set priorities to provide effective, efficient patient care, frequently under pressure of multiple activities.
- Knowledge and/or training of sterilization and infection control protocols.
