Position: Staff Accountant 2

Staff Accountant 2 – Hour Children, Inc.

Reports to: Senior Director of Finance

Seniority Level: Mid‑Senior level

Employment type: Full‑time

Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Salary: Up to $80,000 per year

Job Summary

The Staff Accountant prepares and maintains financial records to track the organization's assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses, and other related financial activities. This position supports accurate financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow tracking, and month‑end account reconciliations with attention to detail, timeliness, and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The Staff Accountant works collaboratively, demonstrates strong organizational and analytical skills, and consistently meets deadlines.

The role promotes and adheres to the organization's mission, vision, values, policies, and applicable laws in a fair and equitable manner.

Responsibilities
  • Works independently on routine and assigned accounting tasks as directed; delivers with timeliness, accuracy, completeness, and effectiveness, to the highest ethical standards and in accordance with GAAP for non‑profit entities and the organization's mission, values, and universal standards.
  • Assists in preparing and submitting budgets and vouchers for government contracts for reimbursement, ensuring accuracy and completeness before review.
  • Collaborates with the Grants and Contracts Manager and other staff as needed to prepare, submit, and track government contract vouchers.
  • Ensures all credit card transactions are properly coded with sufficient backup documentation and uses SAP Concur to process credit card transactions into Sage Intacct.
  • Reviews payroll coding to ensure alignment with grant and contract funding.
  • Prepares journal entries and account reconciliations as part of the month‑end close process.
  • Assists in preparing grant and contract revenue entries in Intacct and in maintaining related receivable records.
  • Prepares monthly receivable aging reports to help track outstanding grant and contract receivable balances and support timely collections.
  • Reconciles revenue between the development database (Bloomerang) and Sage Intacct.
  • Assists in reconciling bank accounts and tracking electronic deposits.
  • Supports invoice processing and petty cash tracking as needed.
  • Assists in the yearly Hour Children annual audit, NYSIF audit, and any other agency audits as needed.
  • Maintains tracking spreadsheets for contract spending and monitors budget‑to‑actual reports as directed.
  • Performs other routine accounting duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting required.
  • Minimum three to five years of accounting experience to understand all general accounting functions; experience in a not‑for‑profit organization is preferred but not required.
  • Skilled with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and Zoom teleconferencing platforms, as well as experience with standard office equipment.
  • Knowledge of accounting and reporting software such as Sage Intacct, Fund Ez, Kindful, etc.; preference for Sage Intacct and SAP Concur.
  • Demonstrated experience in accounting practices for non‑profits preferred.
  • Experience preferred with grants management systems, including work with New York City and New York State grants and contracts and reporting systems such as Passport, Grants Gateway, HHS, etc.
  • Multi‑tasker with excellent communication and relationship building skills, ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; strong analytic, organizational, and critical thinking skills to support sound decision making.
