Overview
The English Department at Bronx Community College invites applications for a Lecturer position in English with a specialty in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL). The successful candidate will be expected to teach a wide range of ESL courses with a focus on academic writing and, possibly, credit‑bearing composition courses geared to native English speakers. We are especially interested in candidates with a strong background in TESOL, basic writing, and writing studies with a record of success in teaching academic literacy to linguistically diverse students.
Responsibilities- Teach ESL courses, including academic writing and composition, in person and through multiple modalities.
- Enroll and mentor diverse student populations; support student learning and success.
- Participate actively in departmental and College committee work and other service duties.
- Serve as ESL Coordinator: advise the English Chairperson on all ESL matters; schedule ESL courses and program meetings; review student placements; hire and train ESL adjunct faculty; coordinate placement exams; support students and faculty on ESL‑related issues; represent the ESL program at campus and CUNY‑wide events.
- Meet the course load of twenty‑four hours per year and fulfill the major expectations of departmental service.
- Bachelor’s degree in the area(s) of expertise.
- MA or PhD in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Language and Literacy, English, Composition Studies, Basic Writing, or related fields.
- Two years or more experience teaching college‑level ESL writing courses.
- Ability to teach successfully, collaborate with others for the good of the institution, and perform service for the department, college, and university.
- Administrative experience preferred.
Salary range: $57,039 to $91,753, commensurate with education and experience.
