Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track position of Assistant Professor of Bilingual Education in the Department of Childhood, Bilingual and Special Education within the School of Education. The position begins in August 2026.
The Department of Childhood, Bilingual, and Special Education (CBSE) prepares teachers to serve diverse learners in urban settings. Grounded in social justice, our programs develop educators with strong pedagogical knowledge and effective teaching practices that integrate research, theory, and practice. We emphasize preparation for teaching bilingual students and students with special needs, fostering culturally responsive and reflective teachers attuned to their students, families, and communities.
CBSE houses undergraduate and graduate programs in Bilingual Education, including the BA in Childhood Bilingual Education (in partnership with the Department of Puerto Rican and Latinx Studies), the MSEd in Childhood Bilingual Education, and the Advanced Certificate in Bilingual Extension (Birth–Grade 12). The department collaborates with the Departments of Communicative Arts, Speech and Disorders, and School Psychology, Counseling, and Leadership to offer specialized coursework for Teachers of Students with Speech‑Language Disabilities and School Counselors.
We partner with New York City Public Schools to support bilingual educator preparation through the NYC Teaching Fellows and Extension Certification programs.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in bilingual education
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with teachers and administrators in bilingual programs across New York City public schools
- Supervise students in bilingual field experiences and/or student teaching
- Mentor students in bilingual education
- Pursue scholarship and a research agenda in bilingual education
- Participate in curriculum and program development in bilingual education, including promoting computing/digital literacies integration across courses
- Collaborate with faculty across departments at Brooklyn College to support existing bilingual programs
- Partner with New York City Public Schools and Teaching Fellows initiatives to advance the preparation of bilingual educators
- Sustain and expand bilingual programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels
- Serve on department, school, and university committees
- Doctorate in Bilingual Education, Education, Urban Education, or related field from an accredited institution
- Experience working in a bilingual education setting
- Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in bilingual education
- Demonstrated potential for scholarly research in bilingual education, including peer‑reviewed publications and conference presentations
- Innovative research agenda combining bilingual education with another field (e.g., computer science, digital literacies, AI, social studies, mathematics, literacy, science, immigration studies)
- Expertise in curriculum development, fieldwork supervision, and program assessment in bilingual education
- Experience in program coordination and sustaining partnerships with external partners
- Prior experience as a bilingual educator
- Demonstrated excellence in previous teaching positions
- Commitment to preparing teacher candidates for career readiness through effective field‑based experiences and student teaching supervision
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis. Sponsorship will not be offered for this position.
Compensation$90,838 – $102,017; salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
