Assistant, Associate or Full Professor – Photonics – CUNY Advanced Science Research Center

Position Overview
The Photonics Initiative of the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) is seeking an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor tenure-track faculty member to join in Fall 2026. The Graduate Center is the focal point for advanced teaching and research at CUNY, the nation's largest urban public university. With over 35 doctoral and master’s programs of the highest caliber, the Graduate Center fosters pioneering research and scholarship in the arts and sciences and prepares students for careers in universities and the private, nonprofit, and government sectors.

ASRC’s Photonics Initiative has established itself as a leading optics and photonics research center in New York City, nationwide and internationally. The initiative has over 40 active researchers and two established core user facilities in nanophotonics and in radio frequency (RF) and millimeter waves, with a broad range of users from across CUNY, other academic institutions, and industry. We seek an outstanding scientist with a strong record of significant research accomplishments in one or more of the following fields: nanophotonics, plasmonics, nano-optics, quantum optics, optomechanics, terahertz technology, ultrafast spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, electromagnetic theory and applications, metamaterials, biophotonics, and other fields broadly related to photonics and electromagnetics.

In this role, you will engage in research, teaching and mentorship of students and laboratory members; make key contributions to shape the ASRC’s cross‑disciplinary program; develop educational programming at CUNY; and initiate new interdisciplinary collaborative projects and activities across CUNY and other research institutions.

This position reports to the ASRC Photonics Initiative Director.

A preferred candidate will have a Ph.D. degree in a photonics‑related area, demonstrated achievements in research and scholarship, and a history of conducting high‑impact scientific research adopting interdisciplinary approaches. We encourage applications from candidates with a collaborative spirit, an innovative research plan that complements current Photonics Initiative efforts, and facility with a wide range of experimental and other approaches to tackle fundamental questions in photonics.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis. Sponsorship will not be offered for this position.

Compensation

$104,000 - $163,000 per year. CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs.
