Salary: $30.00 - $35.00/hour

Position Summary:

The Children's Aid's Adult Education Program at the Salome Urena Campus, offers classes in English as a Second Language (ESOL) Levels I - III and social-emotional learning (SEL). The Adult Education Program are offered in two cycles (September-January and February- end of May) depending on the course classes meet twice a week from 6:00pm-9:00pm. The ESOL Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality English language instruction to non-native English speakers, with a focus on fostering language development, academic progress, and cultural integration.

The instructor designs and implements engaging effective lessons aligned with New York State standards and student language proficiency levels, using a variety of teaching methods to support diverse learning styles.

Essential Duties:

  • Understand and promote the organization's Mission, Vision, and Core Values to ensure alignment with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Assess student English language proficiency using the BEST PLUS 2.0.
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
  • Conduct three assessments per student, a pre-assignment, a mid-assessment and a post-assessment to ensure students are meeting program indicators.
  • Observe and evaluate students' work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Adapt teaching/facilitation methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs, abilities, and interests.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by Children's Aid Society policies.
  • Provide rigorous and appropriate instruction to ESOL students that supports the acceleration of English is aligned with Department of New York State Standard.
  • Prepare students for further education by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.
  • Serve as a liaison between the student, his/her family and the school, especially with respect to cultural and language differences, and providing cross- cultural information to all parties that foster positive relationships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have bachelor's or master's degree in related subject.
  • At least two years of experience of teaching is highly preferred.

Key Competencies:

  • Able to teach adults in Core English as Second Language or social-emotional learning curriculum.
