Job SummaryThe Broadway Spotlight Writing Teaching Artist supports 92NY School Engagement in the Arts by leading high-quality, in-school writing instruction for NYC ELA high school classrooms serving Deaf and hard-of-hearing students as part of the 2026 Broadway Spotlight Program.
Teaching Artists lead eight dynamic, in-school classroom sessions per assigned class, guiding students through an active, hands-on exploration of the Broadway musical & Juliet with a focus on writing. Lessons engage students in analyzing the musical and translating their insights into original written work, including creative writing, narrative, and script-based exercises.
This role emphasizes delivering rigorous, accessible, and culturally responsive writing instruction that centers students lived experiences. Teaching Artists foster creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking, supporting learners in producing original writing that reflects artistic growth and a deeper engagement with their field trip experience to go see the Broadway musical & Juliet.
Teaching Artists collaborate closely with 92NY staff, classroom teachers, and school administrators to ensure instruction is accessible, culturally responsive, and tailored to each classroom community. Classroom placements are designed to align with the artist's strengths and expertise to maximize student engagement and learning.
Job Responsibilities Include- Lessons take place during school hours (8:00 AM-2:30 PM) between February and May 2026.
- Partner school is in Manhattan.
- Mandatory curriculum training with 92NY staff will be held in January 2026.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and inspiring learning environment that encourages participation, creativity, and joy in theater-making.
- Communicate weekly and proactively with 92NY staff and classroom teachers to ensure smooth program delivery and address successes and challenges.
- Arrive punctually and fully prepared for each school visit.
- Document each class through photos and student testimonials, in alignment with program guidelines.
- Represent 92NY and the School Engagement Department with professionalism, warmth, and enthusiasm.
- Attend all required trainings, meetings, and professional development sessions.
- Maintain open, consistent communication with program staff-seeking support when needed and contributing to a collaborative teaching community.
Deliver eight engaging, student-centered lessons per participating class.
(2 classes per visit, 45-60 minutes each)
- Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and experienced teaching Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
- 3-5 years of teaching experience in public school or equivalent settings, preferably with high school Deaf students.
- Strong background in ELA education, creative writing, Shakespeare, narrative development, and script-based exercises.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and re-engage large classroom groups with varied learning needs.
- Commitment to inclusive, student-centered instruction and fostering positive classroom culture.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and classroom management skills.
- Experience implementing culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy.
- Interest in working within a pre-developed curriculum for the ELA classrooms.
- Pre-existing fingerprint clearance through the NYC and New York State Departments of Education preferred.
Must be available during designated NYC public school hours.

Per Diem Compensation
$110/per class session.
Teaching Artists are also compensated for participation in curriculum meetings with 92NY and planning meetings with school staff.
