Position Overview
Make the Road New York (MRNY) is a multi‑service organization that builds the power of immigrant and working‑class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. MRNY operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn;
Jackson Heights, Queens;
Port Richmond, Staten Island;
Brentwood, Long Island; and White Plains, Westchester County. The Department of Legal and Support Services works to strengthen the organization’s organizing work by providing legal support for policy work and direct services to high‑need immigrant communities.
Supervising Attorney – Workplace Justice Practice
Key Responsibilities- Oversee the provision of workplace justice‑related legal services to MRNY’s membership base in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Westchester County.
- Provide exceptional supervision and support to attorneys and paralegals on the team.
- Collaborate with MRNY members and organizers to design and implement strategic affirmative‑litigation projects and other strategies that strengthen workplace justice organizing.
- Provide technical legal support for policy and organizing campaigns such as drafting legislation, training staff and members, writing reports, lobbying, media responses, and representing MRNY at meetings with elected officials and coalition partners.
- Coordinate community outreach, including know‑your‑rights workshops and legal clinics.
- Handle a small direct legal‑services caseload in employment law (primarily wage theft and employment discrimination).
- Manage workplace‑justice‑related grant reporting and supervise case‑data and reporting requirements.
- Participate in the leadership of the Legal Department to advance organizational goals and maintain funding relationships.
- Eligible to work in the US.
- Admission to practice law in New York State.
- Fluency in Spanish.
- At least 4 years of workers' rights advocacy and employment litigation experience.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑energy environment.
- Interpersonal and organizational skills of the highest caliber.
- Commitment to cultivating a high‑performing department that uses the law creatively in the fight for systemic change.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; self‑starter.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet strict deadlines.
- Strong legal writing, research, and verbal and written communication skills.
- Flexible schedule; some evenings or weekends required.
- High level of accountability and initiative; eager to work collaboratively.
- Relevant lived experience, including membership in a low‑income, immigrant community.
Salary range: $104,500 to $115,500 (higher for candidates with more than 7 years of experience). MRNY offers health insurance, 401(k), and generous paid vacation, sick, and personal days.
