Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC) is a major tertiary care provider in Queens with 545 beds, including a Level I Trauma Center, an Emergency Heart Care Station, and a 911 receiving facility. Purpose of Position: Under supervision, provide professional nursing care to patients/clients within an assigned unit. Diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems through nursing methods such as case‑finding, health teaching, counseling, and supportive care.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
- Identify and discriminate between physical and psychosocial signs and symptoms; select and perform therapeutic measures essential for effective execution of the nursing plan.
- Develop, implement, and continuously evaluate the nursing regimen for assigned patients/clients.
- Record and maintain nursing care plans and progress notes to ensure continuity of care.
- Interpret and report patients’ responses to appropriate members of the health team.
- Participate with interdisciplinary team members to plan a comprehensive patient care program.
- Determine and assign components of the nursing regimen that may be carried out by allied nursing personnel.
- Provide teaching, guidance, and direction to allied nursing personnel in rendering patient care.
- Participate in defining, implementing, maintaining, and interpreting standards of nursing practice.
- Participate in departmental and interdisciplinary conferences related to policies and procedures affecting nursing practice.
- Participate in determining conditions, resources, and policies essential to the delivery of nursing care services.
- Participate in developing and maintaining a system of evaluating nursing care practices and procedures, including evaluation of nursing personnel.
- Interpret the agency’s philosophy and objectives to patients/clients, families, and other groups.
- Maintain professional competence through continuing education and other appropriate learning experiences.
- Perform other professional nursing activities as delegated by nursing service administration.
- A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
- A valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). If applicable, a valid limited permit for newly graduated RNs must also be held.
For assignments in post‑acute care only, individuals who meet the following criteria may also be considered: a graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department as licensure qualifying for RN, and a current application for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate supervision of a licensed RN for up to 90 days post‑graduation, pending receipt of a limited permit;
upon receiving the permit, practice may continue for up to one year under supervision.
