Under the direction of the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Manager of the Midwifery Service functions as the manager of the Midwife service and as such is responsible for the overall development of the Midwifery Service and for coordinating all the ongoing activities of the service.
FULL TIME / MONDAY - FRIDAY
Responsibilities- Provide visionary leadership and direction for the midwifery department, ensuring alignment with the hospital's mission and values.
- Coords all Midwifery activities within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
- In conjunction with the Director of Obstetrics, oversees the creation, implementation, and continuous review of midwifery protocols for both staff and voluntary midwives, ensuring adherence to the latest clinical guidelines and best practices and compliance with State regulations, American College of Nurse Midwives standards, the By-Laws of Maimonides Medical Center and insurance providers.
- Manages and supports staff midwives, including hiring and collaborating with Nurse Recruitment for onboarding, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes professional growth, excellence in care, and adherence to evidence-based practices.
- Selects, hires, onboards, and supervises midwives; initiates disciplinary action, including terminations; conducts annual performance appraisals and recommends promotions, raises, etc.
- Orients and trains new midwives and ensures they receive mandatory training in CPR, Neonatal Resuscitation, Third Trimester Sonogram, Labor Pro Ultrasound, etc.
- Ensures adequate midwife coverage and medical assistant coverage of all obstetrical clinical areas by developing work schedules, coordinating vacation and holiday schedules, approving overtime as necessary and arranging coverage for absent staff; maintains employee attendance records and processes timecards.
- Responsible for the Quality Assurance activities of the Midwifery Service, participates in departmental QA activities and leads quality improvement initiatives, monitoring outcomes and implementing strategies to enhance the quality of care.
- Collaborates with hospitalists to ensure seamless integration of midwifery services within the broader healthcare team, enhancing patient care and outcomes.
- Develops and implements ongoing education and training programs for midwifery staff, including orientation for new staff and continuing education opportunities; coordinates clinical education for family practice residents, medical students and student nurse midwives.
- Spearheads development of new programs related to midwifery, identifying growth opportunities, securing funding, and ensuring successful launch and sustainability.
- Ensures all midwifery practices are compliant with state and federal regulations, hospital policies, maintaining high standards of care and patient safety.
- Champions patient-centered care, advocating for the needs and preferences of mothers and families.
- Facilitates effective communication and collaboration between the midwifery department and other hospital departments to ensure cohesive, multidisciplinary care.
