The IRS-Certified Tax Preparer is responsible for preparing accurate federal, state, and local tax returns in compliance with IRS regulations. This role provides professional tax preparation services to individuals and families during the tax season, ensuring confidentiality, accuracy, and high-quality customer service. The VITA program offers free, accurate tax preparation services to eligible individuals and families under the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
The preparer ensures compliance with IRS quality standards, confidentiality requirements, and ethical guidelines while delivering excellent client service during tax season.
- Prepare federal and state income tax returns using IRS-approved tax preparation software
- Review completed intake forms and supporting documentation provided by intake staff
- Accurately enter taxpayer information, income, deductions, and credits
- Ensure compliance with IRS tax law, VITA scope limitations, and program guidelines
- Address tax-related questions from clients as needed, within the scope of the preparer role
- Correct errors identified during quality review prior to submission
- Maintain accurate and complete electronic tax records
- Protect taxpayer confidentiality and comply with IRS data security standards
- Stay current with IRS tax law updates and VITA certification requirements
- Current IRS VITA/TCE Certification at the appropriate level (Basic or Advanced; state certification if applicable)
- Completion of IRS Volunteer Standards of Conduct (VSC) training
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal and applicable state tax laws
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment
- Advanced VITA certification
- Prior experience preparing VITA tax returns
- Familiarity with New York State tax filings (if applicable)
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required
- Must adhere to IRS Volunteer Standards of Conduct
- Annual completion of all required IRS certifications
- Compliance with VITA quality review and internal program procedures
- Seasonal tax preparation environment
- Evening and weekend availability may be required during peak season
- Position ends at the close of tax season
