Staff Accountant

Location: New York

We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join a retail organization in New York, New York on a Contract basis. This position supports daily accounting activity with a strong emphasis on reconciliations, cash activity, and transaction accuracy across store, banking, and eCommerce channels. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with high-volume financial data, researching exceptions, and collaborating with finance, accounting, and technical teams to keep reporting accurate and month-end close on track.

Responsibilities:
• Oversee daily cash activity and coordinate with accounts payable and accounts receivable teams to ensure bank-related items are addressed promptly and accurately.
• Prepare and maintain reconciliations for bank accounts across multiple entities, confirming that transactions are fully recorded and properly supported.
• Review financial activity from retail and online sales channels, matching transactions across platforms and resolving exceptions that affect reporting accuracy.
• Investigate discrepancies involving payment processors, eCommerce systems, and internal accounting records, partnering with cross-functional teams to correct data issues.
• Track and account for merchant fees, chargebacks, employee card activity, and expense report transactions within the general ledger.
• Assist with the monthly close by posting journal entries, preparing accruals, and reconciling balance sheet accounts tied to cash, liabilities, receivables, and employee expenses.
• Escalate unresolved reconciling items before close deadlines and help ensure missing or incomplete transactions are researched in a timely manner.
• Compile schedules and supporting documentation for audit requests and contribute to accounting improvements, system-related initiatives, and other ad hoc projects.
