Library Assistant 1 – New York State Center for Recruitment & Public Service
Pay RangeThe salary range is based on your skills and experience.
Base pay range$21,321.00/yr - $26,207.00/yr
ResponsibilitiesPerforms copy cataloging, creates and maintains serial control records, works to acquire library materials by searching online computer library centre records or other bibliographic sources to assist with collection development, designates and tags appropriate serial titles for binding, assists with the preservation of library materials, assists incarcerated individuals in a prison setting.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications for the Promotional Examination
- Must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had 45 days of permanent competitive, non-competitive, NY HELPS, labour, or 55-b/55-c service in a clerical, keyboarding, or secretarial title allocated to Salary Grade 6 or higher.

- If you were permanently appointed to a qualifying title on or before June 26, 2024, and have served continuously in this title since that date, you are eligible to file for this examination.
- Employees appointed via the NY HELPS program to a qualifying title in the non‑competitive class will have their names restricted from appointment until their position is covered in the competitive class or they obtain permanent competitive status.
- After one year of service described in the Minimum Qualifications, successful candidates will be qualified for appointment from the eligible list.
Minimum Qualifications for the Open Competitive Examination
- Either (1) graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma; AND one year of full‑time clerical experience in a library setting, or (2) One year of full‑time clerical experience in a library setting.
- Examples of qualifying clerical duties in a library setting may include:
- Maintaining circulation records;
- Processing acquisitions including receipt and recording of courier‑delivered materials and organising new items;
- Creating and processing interlibrary loan requests (ILL);
- Assisting in collection maintenance such as weeding, shifting, re‑shelving, repairing, straightening, inventory, supply orders, and emptying book drop containers to be checked in;
- Assisting and educating patrons in searching the catalog;
- Assisting patrons in the use of library equipment.
