The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous material pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP’s water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the city.
The Bureau of Environmental Compliance’s mission is the enforcement of environmental laws and regulations that affect the health and safety of the public and environment. Specifically, the bureau enforces the City’s Asbestos regulations as well as the Air and Noise Codes. The Bureau is comprised of the Division of Air & Noise Policy, Permitting and Enforcement, and the Asbestos Control Program.
These divisions respond to air and noise code complaints; inspect and track asbestos removal projects; and foster the goals of environmental protection.
- Perform clerical work in relation to printing out summonses in a timely manner categorized by hearing date.
- Process Department of State summonses by assembling packages in chronological order and processing certified and regular mail.
- Update and upload records in a database for accuracy of information and edit information in computer systems to update records.
The ideal candidate will have experience in customer service and administrative duties with New York City DEP with at least three years of professional experience. The Clerical Associate should be proficient in computers and have a working knowledge of MS Office skills, including Excel and Word.
CLERICAL ASSOCIATE – 10251Minimum Qualifications
- A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and one year of satisfactory clerical experience.
- Keyboard proficiency with the ability to type at a minimum of 100 key strokes (20 words) per minute.
- Ability to perform clerical functions efficiently and accurately.
- ability to carry out assigned tasks decisively and accurately, and work efficiently.
- Excellent customer service and oral communication.
- Clear and diplomatic communication with the public and supervisors.
- Strong attention to detail and organization skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong computer skills to ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner.

Residency RequirementNew York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the city for two continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
