Temporary Paralegal I, Housing Justice Helpline

The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Practice has Temporary Paralegal I positions available to support the Housing Justice Helpline and the Emergency Response (ERT) team’s. The Temporary Helpline Paralegal I plays a key role in assisting both the Helpline and ERT by providing high‑volume data entry, archiving, and case management support. When appropriate, the Paralegal may also make referrals to relevant external agencies.

In this role, the Paralegal will perform a wide range of tasks essential to the efficient operation of the teams, including general administrative support. The position may also require occasional work at other Legal Aid Society offices or intake locations.

This position is funded through a temporary grant, and the continuation of the position is dependent on funding availability. The position is funded for an initial period of 12 months, with the possibility of extension based on continued funding and project needs. If funding is not continued, the Temporary Paralegal I will be eligible to apply for internal positions or be transferred into a comparable position.

ESSENTIAL

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform administrative duties such as downloading, organizing, and routing Helpline voicemails and referrals.
  • Enter data on various databases, including the case management system.
  • Generate daily, weekly, and monthly reports from various databases as needed.
  • Maintain and update case management database.
  • Obtain and copy court and office files.
  • Backup and support other administrative staff.
  • Assist in oral and written translation as needed.
  • Create case files.
  • Copy, collate, and batch documents.
  • Assist with court filings.
  • Conduct off‑site work as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required qualifications:

  • Eligible candidates must have at least one of the following:
    • A high school diploma / GED
    • At least 2 years of work experience
  • Strong writing, verbal, and organization skills.
  • Proficiency in word processing and strong computer skills.
  • Ability to learn and efficiently use new systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on a team.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and/or weekends.
  • Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low‑income people is strongly desired.

Preferred qualifications:

  • One year of experience in a legal or other relevant work (paid or unpaid) environment is highly preferred.
  • Some relevant college level work and/or paralegal training preferred.
  • Licensed Notary preferred or willing to become licensed.
  • In addition to the above, fluency in Spanish or other languages is highly preferred.
SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salary range represents a good‑faith estimate of the range we expect to pay for this role. The actual salary offered may vary depending on many factors, including but not limited to job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

Salary Range: $53,295 – $81,795

HIGHEST EDUCATION AND LOAN FORGIVENESS

The Legal Aid Society is a qualified employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness. This position allows an employee to take advantage of PSLF and other State and Federal loan forgiveness programs. Additionally, employees who are New York residents may be eligible for assistance from New York state to assist with loan repayments, depending on years of practice.
