Job Description & How to Apply Below
Working Shop Foreman / Head Technician

Hands-On Fleet Shop Manager | Mechanical Repair & Body Shop

Location:

Long Island City, Queens, NY | Full-time, on-site

Reports to:

General Manager, working directly with ownership

Pay: $105,000–$125,000 base, plus performance bonus

This is a working leadership role for an experienced mechanic who can diagnose difficult repairs, direct a busy team and keep vehicles moving safely through the shop. It is not a desk-only manager or service-writer job. Prior NYC taxi-garage experience is strongly preferred.

About WB Taxi

WB Taxi owns and maintains about 400 NYC yellow taxis and supports 1,000+ active drivers. Our Long Island City mechanical and body shops run 24/7, 365 days a year. We need a dependable, high-energy leader who knows the pace of a taxi garage and can return safe, reliable vehicles to service with minimal avoidable downtime.

Responsibilities
  • Shop floor: Set priorities, assign jobs by skill and keep bays moving across urgent repairs, preventive maintenance, inspections and longer jobs. Catch delays early; every down vehicle should have a technician, a next step and a realistic completion time.
  • Head technician: Personally diagnose difficult mechanical, electrical and drivability problems, assist with repairs and coach technicians. Verify diagnoses, find root causes and prevent unnecessary parts replacement while keeping oversight of the whole shop.
  • Team leadership: Give clear instructions, monitor progress and workmanship, train mechanics and helpers, and address attendance and productivity promptly and respectfully. Coordinate coverage and shift handoffs; recommend staffing and performance actions.
  • Parts and records: Coordinate parts ordering and follow up on delays, track warranties and returns, and keep accurate work orders. Organize preventive maintenance, flag recurring failures, repeat work and excessive costs, and
    ** escalate
    * * repair-versus-replace decisions.
  • Body work and taxi prep: Coordinate collision repair, body work, reassembly and mechanical work with staff and vendors. Track hack-ups, inspection readiness and rechecks, and coordinate wheelchair-accessible vehicle work with qualified personnel.
  • Quality, safety and reporting: Verify repairs and arrange road tests before release. Never return an unsafe vehicle to meet a deadline. Enforce safe equipment use and an orderly shop. Give the GM a daily update on vehicles down, completed repairs, parts shortages, open problems and expected return‑to‑service times.
Required
  • Substantial hands‑on automotive repair and diagnostic experience, plus experience directing mechanics in a busy shop
  • Ability to use diagnostic equipment and service information, check others’ work, juggle priorities and follow jobs through
  • Consistent pace, sound judgment, reliable attendance and follow‑through
  • Clear communication with technicians, drivers and management; basic digital record‑keeping
  • Comfort in a demanding, high‑volume garage
  • Valid driver’s license for moving and road‑testing vehicles
  • Ability to perform essential shop duties safely, with or without reasonable accommodation
Stands out

Foreman, head mechanic or working‑manager experience in an NYC yellow‑taxi garage is strongly preferred. Livery, rideshare, rental or other high‑mileage fleet experience is also valuable, as are Toyota and hybrid diagnostics, wheelchair‑accessible vehicles, body‑shop coordination, TLC inspection prep, taxi hack‑ups and leading a diverse, multilingual team. No college degree or luxury‑dealership background required; we value proven repair knowledge, leadership and results.

Schedule

This role supports a 24/7 fleet. Expect long shifts, extended hours during heavy periods, weekend coverage and scheduled after‑hours escalation. Your regular workweek, hours and coverage will be agreed before an offer. Coverage is shared with management and other staff; no one person covers every shift.

How success is measured

Fewer avoidable vehicle‑down days, dependable completion times, fewer repeat repairs, timely preventive maintenance and inspection prep, productive technicians, accurate records, and controlled parts and repair costs. Speed and savings never outrank safe, correct repairs.

WB Taxi is an equal opportunity employer. Applicants are evaluated on job‑related qualifications and ability to perform the essential duties, with reasonable accommodations where required.
