Northside Center for Child Development serves over 4,000 children annually through high-quality, outcomes-driven behavioral health, early childhood, and enrichment services. Northside has been a staple of the Harlem community since its founding in 1946 and a pioneer at the intersection of education and behavioral health for Black and Latino children. Several of its programs were the first in Harlem and established the standard of care for many social service agencies. Northside’s founders, Doctors Kenneth, and Mamie Clark were psychologists whose breakthrough Black/White Doll Study was used as evidence in Brown v.

Board of Education, which declared public school segregation unconstitutional. The philosophy behind this landmark decision, now on its 70 th anniversary, continues to inspire Northside to create and drive innovative programs that focus on the strengths of families and the importance of children’s self-esteem.

We are looking for Group Leaders and Youth counselors to Build a positive relationship with each after-school participant in our care and foster positive connections. We expect you to always engage with all children actively to foster positive youth development.

• Demonstrates a commitment to leadership development, and community building.
• Conduct yourself as a professional and representative of the agency with all staff, parents, children, and anyone else with whom you come into contact in your role.
• Help participants develop and strengthen academic, physical, and social skills.
• Plan, implement, and lead successful educational activities, and or supervise extracurricular programs such as Dance or Art.
• Implement behavior management techniques to ensure a safe and positive environment.
• Maintain a clean and organized classroom.
• Collaborate with other staff members to create a cohesive and engaging program.

• A four-year high school diploma or equivalent.
• Associate degree in Education, Family Studies, Psychology, Liberal Arts, or related field preferred.
• Previous experience working with children in a daycare, classroom, or similar setting.
• Knowledge of childhood development principles and practices
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to manage a group of children and maintain discipline.
