Help us elevate independent journalism across four desks (National, Metro, Science, and Climate) by developing creative communication campaigns, building media relationships, and partnering with newsroom, marketing, and executive teams.
Responsibilities- Develop communication strategies and campaigns that showcase The New York Times’s differentiating journalism and increase understanding of independent journalism.
- Build communications campaigns using a wide array of tactics: direct reporter outreach, pitching, events, company-wide programming, and owned channel highlight projects.
- Partner with newsroom leadership to anticipate upcoming stories and shape communication strategy.
- Work with the rapid‑response team to craft messaging that preempts potential issues.
- Support and uphold the organization’s commitment to journalistic independence and the mission to seek the truth.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- 6+ years of experience landing stories in traditional media outlets (consumer, lifestyle, business).
- 6+ years in media relations and communication strategy development.
- Strong relationships with media producers, reporters, and bookers, with the ability to maintain and grow them.
- Deep media fluency and understanding of the media landscape and key players, including social media.
- Impeccable writing skills – clear, succinct, and compelling.
- Enthusiasm for working across diverse projects with newsroom, strategy, and marketing teams.
- Belief in the societal value of journalism.
- Experience with new media – podcasts, influencers, creators.
- Background in journalism and working within newsrooms.
Competitive base salary between $110,000 and $130,000 USD, remote flexibility, and a diverse, inclusive work environment.
