Overview

The Public Programs production team at The New York Public Library (NYPL) supports a wide range of departments across the library system including our flagship public facing programming series LIVE from NYPL. The Audio Visual Technicians for Public Programs report to the Assistant Director of Audio Visual and Production and work on a production team for live events, hybrid meetings, and internal staff audio‑visual needs.

Responsibilities
  • Live Production A/V Set‑ups and Strikes:
    Prepare and dismantle audio and video equipment for live events, including meticulous placement, cabling, testing, breakdown, packing, and storage.
  • Production Multi‑tasking:
    Independently operate or collaborate with a team to manage lighting, audio, and video equipment for various productions.
  • Hybrid Video Conferencing:
    Facilitate successful hybrid events by setting up equipment, managing virtual platforms, and troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Live streaming, Audio, and Video Recordings:
    Execute live broadcasts and capture high‑quality audio/video content by configuring platforms, managing settings, ensuring connectivity, and operating recording equipment.
  • Advanced Video Camera and Switcher Operation:
    Proficiently operate professional video cameras (e.g., PTZ, camcorders, focus, exposure, white balance, framing) and video switchers (managing sources, transitions, graphics, signal flow).
  • Advanced Projector and Video Display Operation:
    Understand projection technologies, display types, resolutions, aspect ratios, and calibration. Troubleshoot issues and optimize image quality for presentations.
  • Assisting Non‑Technical Colleagues:
    Provide prompt A/V support, translate technical concepts, and offer basic training to empower colleagues with equipment usage.
Required Experience & Skills Required Experience
  • Minimum of 6 years of live audio experience required (e.g., A1 or A2).
  • Minimum of 6 years with basic live video production experience required (e.g., camera operator).
Required Skills
  • Deep understanding of audio and video signal flow, including various signal types and routing (HDMI, XLR, SDI).
  • Proficient in operating digital and analog audio mixers for optimal sound.
  • Extensive experience in live event production, from setup to breakdown, under tight deadlines.
  • Expertise in facilitating and troubleshooting hybrid video conferencing, integrating in‑person and remote participants seamlessly.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Audition), and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides).
  • Exceptional organizational skills for AV equipment handling, storage, and maintenance, adhering to inventory protocols.
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues in high‑pressure live environments, minimizing downtime.
  • Excellent interpersonal and non‑technical communication skills to explain technical concepts and provide guidance to staff and guests.

Schedule
