Deputy Editorial Operations Manager (Volunteer)

Are you a college student or recent graduate who has a way with words looking to gain experience in journalism or publishing – and make a difference in the process? If so, the up-and-coming, nonprofit news organization Who What Why  may have the ideal opportunity for you to grow professionally, contribute to the greater good, and have fun.

Who What Why  is seeking a Deputy Editorial Operations Manager with the personality, creative problem solving, organizational, and leadership skills to help a rapidly growing news organization build structure and processes for the newsroom and continuously tackle new challenges and opportunities.

Who What Why  is a nonprofit. We are not funded by a zillionaire. We do not accept corporate ads. As such, we seek skilled volunteers to fill out our growing organizational infrastructure.

We value all levels of experience. We have among us young students, vibrant retirees, and everything in between, from all walks of life.

Responsibilities
  • Work with the Editorial Operations Manager to lead the editorial team and ensure news production happens on time, accurately, and to the best of our editorial ability.
  • Work with the Editorial Operations Manager to analyze current editorial processes, identify weaknesses, and build systems to help the newsroom run more smoothly.
  • Define complicated tasks, set deadlines, and delegate work while keeping our "big picture" in mind.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing / Branding, Social Media, and Creative departments on consistent messaging throughout the organization.
  • Work to continuously raise the level of quality and productivity throughout the editorial department.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (college seniors are welcome to apply).
  • A serious interest and / or experience in journalism or publishing.
  • The ability to define and delegate tasks while motivating others.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • The patience to monitor multiple individuals, projects, and processes.

You will work remotely and on your own schedule. We also ask for a minimum commitment of 10-15 hours a week for six months. Because our staff is spread throughout the world, we communicate mostly through Slack and email, and team members are requested to be highly responsive in a timely manner.
