Job DescriptionThe Art Director is responsible for the design and management of illustrations for The New Yorker. This includes long‑term special Web projects, digital packages such as end‑of‑year bundles, design of social‑media support and digital photo department. The role requires command of digital best practices, emerging technologies and trends in interactive storytelling, and a sophisticated sense of design and detail. This is a Guild position.
Responsibilities- Oversee art and design across all digital platforms.
- Work with photo editors to identify high‑quality photography.
- Commission illustrations for Web articles (six to eight per week).
- Create visuals for quick turnaround articles.
- Design and coordinate art for interactive articles.
- Lead design of flagship digital editorial projects.
- Lead design of social templates and maintain quality, initiating redesigns as needed.
- Additional duties as assigned by manager.
- B.F.A. in graphic design or illustration preferred.
- At least four years of experience as a designer in an editorial environment.
- Digital design experience on desktop and mobile platforms.
- Strong typography skills.
- Advanced knowledge of Creative Suite applications and Figma.
- Experience working in a team with editors, developers, and designers.
- Understanding of The New Yorker’s history, style, and editorial values.
- Willingness to work early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $92,400–$125,000. Offers are based on relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
