The New York Times is looking for a recipe editor to join NYT Cooking, our fast-growing, industry-leading recipe product, which has more than a million subscribers and approximately 24,000 recipes. You will focus on editing our recipes and collaborating on related cooking content, shepherding them from the idea stage all the way to publication. You have excellent recipe editing skills and culinary knowledge including baking expertise, strong line editing skills and great communication and collaboration skills.

You are an expert on how recipes are developed and you can develop ideas independently, with minimal direction and oversight. You will also be able to work well on a collaborative team, manage your time, stay organized, pay very close attention to details, meet deadlines and work efficiently in our publishing system.

This is an in‑office position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities
  • Edit recipes and headnotes for accuracy, clarity, context and New York Times style.
  • Make recipe assignments and work directly with recipe developers, video talent, recipe testers and reporters, and collaborate with video producers and fellow editors to produce outstanding recipes that work and taste delicious.
  • Participate in brainstorming meetings, and generate ideas for recipes and related content for a digital and social audience.
  • Produce, review, tag and publish recipes and related content in our CMS.
  • Train recipe developers, writers and video talent in Times style and practices.
  • Help organize and keep track of recipes in Air Table and our CMS throughout the entire workflow.
  • Gather recipes into collections on NYT Cooking, and update those collections on an ongoing basis.
  • Update existing recipes and cooking instructional content as needed to align with changes to the app and product.
  • Collaborate with the product team on their editorial needs with updates to the app.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

You will report to the Senior Editor, Cooking.

Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum 8 years of experience as a recipe editor, preferably for a newsroom or other publication.
  • Experience collaborating with video and social talent, recipe developers and journalists.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a test kitchen or other professional kitchen is preferred.
  • Superb editorial judgment and attention to detail. You should be meticulous in your work. Copy‑editing experience is a strong plus.
  • Exceptional organization and communication skills.
  • Strong digital skills and the ability to quickly learn the ins and outs of our CMS and other platforms and to adapt to changes in technology.
  • The ability to work independently and self‑start assignments and projects.
  • Flexibility and willingness to pitch in when needed on various tasks to accomplish shared goals.
  • A commitment to the team and working in a collaborative environment.
