Technical Director needed for show in alternative space
The Motor Company NYC, Inc.
Jackson Heights, NY

The Motor Company seeks a Technical Director for our upcoming show A City Doesn't Talk, a new, site-responsive play written for and performed in an abandoned storefront in the NYC subway station as part of the MTA's Vacant Unit Activation program.
About The Motor Company NYC
The Motor Company NYC is a non‑profit, site-responsive theater company dedicate to creating and producing free, accessible, experiential plays that heighten the way New Yorkers engage with their city and surroundings. The Motor Company is at the forefront of keeping experimental theater alive and relevant in an unaffordable city where dedicated performance spaces are closing all the time and even Off-Broadway feels increasingly unattainable.
For over fifteen years, we’ve made free theater that reaches audiences where they are, regardless of socioeconomic status or prior knowledge of the art form. We believe that theater can and should be a catalyst for community building and engagement. We strive to erase the boundaries that keep so many people away from professional theater, and to energize the art form through dynamic public work that activate and reorient our relationship to our shared environments.
Our vision is that all New Yorkers have access to new, engaging, professional theatrical works that are empowering, welcoming, surprising, and inclusive.
Technical Director Position The technical director will work with the set and sound designers to implement the design for the space. They will oversee the load-in and build of the show - mostly focusing on set dressing and assemblage - and develop a schedule for the timely implementation of the set. This is an alternative space, immersive piece - applicants should have familiarity with and enthusiasm for this kind of work.
Timeline The build can happen around the TD's schedule, in coordination with the set designer, starting now through October 17. Tech is scheduled for the week of October 18, with the show opening on October 22nd. Strike will be the first week of January.
