Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) is a nonprofit organization providing health and social services to people affected by HIV. Its expanding service model includes primary care, dental care, mental health services, and comprehensive programming for LGBTQ+ communities, long‑term survivors, women, trans youth, and other communities affected by HIV and health inequities.

The role

The Graphic Designer is a visual communicator responsible for bringing GMHC's mission to life across print and digital channels. The role reports to the Managing Director, Creative Strategy, and sits within the Communications and Branding team. It exists to support both the day-to-day creative needs of the organization and an active rebrand rollout.

What you would do
  • Design print and digital materials across formats including social media graphics, email campaigns, reports, event collateral, signage, and web assets
  • Uphold and evolve brand standards during an active rebrand, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints
  • Retouch, color‑correct, and prepare photos and images for use across communications materials
  • Create and maintain organized design files and asset libraries for team use
  • Translate written content and strategic goals into clear, compelling visual communication
  • Apply basic motion design skills to create simple animated content for social media and digital platforms
  • Prepare production‑ready files and manage relationships with print vendors
  • Support web content updates using CMS tools in collaboration with digital staff
  • Partner with internal stakeholders across departments to scope and fulfill design requests
  • Support light project management tasks, including tracking timelines and communicating proactively on deliverables
What they are looking for
  • 3 to 5 years of graphic design experience in a professional setting, with a digital portfolio of relevant work
  • Demonstrated mastery of typography and visual hierarchy across print and digital formats
  • Solid photo editing skills, including retouching, color correction, and image sourcing
  • Fluency in screen‑based design, including web layouts, social media graphics, and digital campaigns
  • Basic motion design skills, or genuine eagerness to develop them
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop required)
  • Familiarity with or curiosity about Figma, Canva, Adobe After Effects, and emerging design tools
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present and articulate creative decisions
  • Commitment to inclusive, stigma‑free, and people‑first communication, and alignment with LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design preferred, or equivalent professional experience
Working arrangements

This is a hybrid role requiring residence within New York City or the surrounding tri‑state area. You would attend on‑site team working sessions at the New York City office one to three days per week, subject to review over time. Flexibility to work non‑traditional hours during campaigns or events is expected. Participation in AIDS Walk NY is mandatory for all staff.
