Job Description
The NYS Office for People With Developmental Disabilities invites qualified Medical Specialists (Level
2) to join our interdisciplinary care teams.
Base pay: $/year (subject to skills and experience).
Responsibilities- Actively diagnose and treat patients within your specialty, collaborating with other disciplines to ensure comprehensive care.
- Serve as a senior practicing specialist in a recognized medical discipline.
- Assist in the development and revision of medical policies and procedures to maintain quality standards.
- Review laboratory results, specialty consults, hospital discharge summaries, and diagnostic reports to support the group‑home RN and treatment team.
- Coordinate with hospital or rehabilitation facilities to share clinical information and ensure continuity of care.
- Approve discharge summaries before admitting a resident back into the group home.
- Review medical information for new admissions to ensure appropriate care is available.
- Communicate with team members and participate in team meetings, in person or virtually.
- Communicate with family members and advocates, explaining medical or treatment issues.
- Provide short‑term prescription renewals when community providers are unavailable.
- Serve on interdisciplinary treatment teams, committees, and work groups to improve services and outcomes.
- Provide after‑hours and weekend on‑call medical telephone consults on a rotating basis.
- Provide primary medical care coverage for residents if the assigned provider is unavailable.
- Offer medical expertise to Family Care Program and Community Mental Health Nurses as needed.
- Assist with physician coverage in sister regions when required.
- License to practice medicine in New York State (or a valid limited permit; see notes).
- Certification by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in your specialty.
- Not listed on any Federal or State Medicaid/Medicare exclusion list, and must remain excluded‑free.
- Eligible to become an enrolled Medicare provider; must obtain and maintain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number.
- Maintain license, permit, and board certification in good standing throughout employment.
- Must not be a federal or state Medicaid/Medicare excluded individual or entity.
- Require enrollment as a Medicare provider and commitment to billing through Medicare and Medicaid.
- Must retain valid New York State license/permit and board certification; loss will trigger removal.
- Limited‑permit holders must obtain a New York State medical license within one year of the permit issuance.
- Position part of the NY HELPS program; may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment.
- Non‑competitive appointment requires minimum qualifications but no exam; permanent competitive status will convert within one year.
- Eligible OPWDD employees impacted by closures receive preference.
- Full employment depends on continual Medicare/Medicaid participation eligibility.
- Employees may qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness, savings programs, health‑care spending accounts, and more (details available upon hire).
