What is the Role?A true lover of words, reading, writing, and grammar drives you as an ELA Teacher. You create a healthy and safe space for scholars to engage in classroom discussion, guide them through the structure and content of the English language, including meaning, spelling, and composition rules, assign books and essays, identify themes, points of view, and build interpretation skills. An ELA Teacher cultivates listening, speaking, comprehension, and champions all students’ voices.
Our Middle School uses Wit & Wisdom and Quill for English Language Arts, serving as windows and mirrors for students to better understand the world and themselves.
- Internalize standards-aligned curriculum and deliver academically rigorous, culturally relevant lesson plans, materials, and assessments, differentiating as needed.
- Communicate effectively with scholars, families, and staff.
- Implement consistently school-wide systems, structures, procedures, and feedback.
- Eradicate the effects of racism, poverty, and other oppression by making resources, opportunities, support systems, and classrooms equitable and accessible for all stakeholders.
- Analyze instructional and culture data to action plan and strengthen student outcomes.
- Create a positive, structured, results-oriented, fun learning environment supporting students of varied abilities and experiences.
- Participate in school community responsibilities: lunch duty, dismissal and hallway duties, whole‑school events, daily homeroom, bi‑weekly advisory groups, weekly content team meetings, whole‑staff professional development, lesson internalization and practice, week‑long grade team meetings.
- Foster student ownership and engagement encouraging student‑led discussions, independent routines, and accountability for high‑quality work products reflecting their ideas and experiences.
- Respond to feedback, maintain professional integrity, and collaborate with colleagues and leaders to continuously strengthen practice and school culture.
- Cultivate a structured and supportive classroom community prioritizing strong relationships, clear expectations, and a student‑centered approach to behavior management, ensuring all students feel affirmed, engaged, and motivated to learn.
- Passion for education and dedication to Coney Island Prep’s mission, beliefs, values, and anti‑racism commitment.
- Belief that all students can achieve at the highest academic levels and deserve opportunity to succeed in college and career of their choice.
- Bachelor’s degree and NY State teaching certification required;
Master’s degree strongly preferred; we offer $2,000 toward completion of a Master’s degree and NY State certification within two years of employment. - Passion for and expertise in content area; experience with intended grade level preferred.
- Experience with Google Suite, Mac Books, Chromebooks, and flat panels.
- Cultural competencies and willingness to examine beliefs and biases across difference lines.
- Culturally responsive, age‑appropriate conflict resolution skills.
- Proven organizational, oral, and written communication skills; timeliness; accuracy; consistent regular communication; ability to meet deadlines for deliverables.
