The Dalton School, a progressive K-12 gender-inclusive school in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, is consistently recognized as one of the preeminent independent day schools in the nation. Known for its child‑centered approach and an exceptional, inspiring faculty, Dalton enrolls over 1,300 students with approximately 350 faculty and staff. Guided by the Dalton Plan, the foundation of a Dalton education, our faculty meets each student’s evolving needs, interests, and abilities.

Dalton challenges each student to develop intellectual independence, creativity, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility toward others both within the School and in the broader community.

We are seeking a Math Specialist to support mathematics instruction in our Middle School for students in grades 6 - 8. The Math Specialist is responsible for supporting effective mathematics instruction in collaboration with the classroom teacher and working with students who need intervention support services or enrichment outside of class.

The Math Specialist will support students in their learning during class and through small group Labs both in and outside the math classroom. Collaborating with Math teachers in grades 6-8 to foster confidence and enthusiasm in the students’ study of mathematical concepts, along with supporting students to develop fluency with foundational algebra topics, is central to this role. As a member of the MS Math Department and Learning Support Team, they will collaborate closely with Math teachers in grades 6-8, Learning Specialists, the MS Math Department Chair, and the Middle School Assistant Director for Academic Support and Student Services.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Math teachers to adapt curriculum, assessments, and classroom practices that reflect strategic, accessible, and differentiated instruction.
  • Teach or co-teach a math class in grades 4-8.
  • Collaborate with House Advisors, teachers, and the Dean of Academic Support & Student Services to coordinate and provide support for students.
  • Help monitor the academic progress of students, and alert the Dean of Academic Support & Student Services and grade-level teams when issues arise.
  • Identify learning styles and recommend appropriate strategies for the teacher and student to implement, through written Learning Plans and by ensuring that accommodations are met.
  • Serve as a member of a grade-level team.
  • Work with Grade Level Coordinators, Learning Specialists, and House Advisors to ensure that individual student support is integrated into the broader student experience, and not siloed by subject area.
  • Proctor for extended time and separate location testing.
  • Think creatively and flexibly on best structures to support student learning (based on data as well).
  • Work individually or in small groups with students in grades 6-8 (who are identified by teachers and administrators) both in class and during multiple Lab periods a week.
  • Communicate information regarding progress in math through rotational meetings with House Advisors, attend case conferences and guidance meetings as needed, complete checklist reports, and facilitate communication between tutors and teachers to coordinate the support program.
  • Opportunity to support students in other disciplines or with general student skills.
  • Opportunity for leadership with Department Chair role; 4 year term (application required).
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Education or a related field. Special Education Degree preferred.
  • Experience with teaching Middle School students as a math learning specialist, and knowledge of mathematics content through Algebra 1.
  • Prior experience in working with Middle School students with learning differences.
  • Places value in using an asset based, whole child approach to supporting students.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong skills in data gathering, organizing, analysis and follow through; developing differentiated plans and implementing next steps.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and proven success…
