Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens,LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States;
they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.
Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. Under the Chief Librarian and Chairperson, the Public Services Specialist is responsible for supervising Library operations for the Public Services unit at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, Queens. The Public Services Specialist works closely with the students, staff, and faculty of a variety of campus and CUNY offices and programs to provide administrative support.
Specifically, the Public Services Specialist is expected to perform the following duties:
- Assist the Chief Librarian on all matters pertaining to the administration of the Public Services unit, including supervising, scheduling, and evaluating full- and part-time support staff for the Circulation and Media service desks;
- Assist the Chief Librarian in data collection and reporting for the Public Services unit;
- Coordinate and manage workflows and communication for two busy, public-facing service points with a customer service and accessibility mindset;
- Maintain or revise loan policies to serve local needs while staying in alignment with CUNY-wide policies;
- Maintain and manage the Reserves collection, permanent stacks, and other physical collections;
- Maintain and manage the Media collection, including loanable technology such as laptops and calculators, and the Library’s group study rooms;
- Liaise with the university-wide CUNY Office of Library Services and the Fulfillment Advisory Committee on matters concerning CUNY collections, including configuration within the library services platform, Alma;
- Participate in campus- or university-wide committees and projects and undertake additional assignments and program activities as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree and four years’ related experience required; MLS degree or Master’s in a related field may be substituted for a portion of the experience requirement.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Experience working in Access Services, Media Services, and/or libraries;
- Expertise with supervision, management, and scheduling of high-traffic service points;
- Expertise with library services platforms, such as Alma;
- Expertise with academic resource management tools such as CUNYFirst;
- Ability to work in a diverse setting;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

- Assists faculty, students, and librarians in order to evaluate needs and locate appropriate materials on a timely basis
