Overview
Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks a Sports & Recreation Specialist to support our K-12 programming. The role is part-time and reports to the health coordinator. The Sports & Recreation Specialist will facilitate daily physical activity for students and help implement Healthy Harlem programming at respective sites.
Base pay range: $25.00/hr - $30.00/hr the range provided by HCZ reflects general ranges; actual pay will be based on skills and experience. For more details, speak with your recruiter.
Responsibilities- Organize and lead daily physical activity for students
- Promote physical literacy: motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding to value lifelong engagement in physical activities
- Incorporate sports, games, and a variety of other engaging activities in a positive, fun environment
- Adapt activities to engage children with various skill sets and interests
- Implement physical activities in settings such as small classrooms, cafeterias, and gymnasiums
- Provide clear classroom instructions, including learning objectives and transitions
- Provide consistent motivation, enthusiasm, and role modelling for healthy lifestyle choices
- Gather height and weight measurements and facilitate PACER fitness tests
- Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, health education, or a related field
- Experience implementing physical activities in school-based, after-school, camp, or community-based settings
- Comfortable working in urban settings with diverse populations
- Team-oriented with strong organizational and collaborative skills
- Animated, energetic spirit and a positive, resilient attitude
- Adapts well to changes and can respond effectively to new information and unexpected obstacles
- Must be able to sit or stand for long periods
- Fall & Spring:
Monday–Friday, 2:00 PM–8:00 PM - After-school programming: minimum 20 hours per week, with a minimum of 4 hours per day (schedules determined based on the program)
