Job Description & How to Apply Below
Location: New York

Building on its Charter mandate, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) promotes the well‑being of immigrant communities by recommending policies and programs that facilitate the successful integration of immigrant New Yorkers into the civic, economic, and cultural life of the City.

We Speak NYC is the city’s free English Language Learning program, created and managed by MOIA. We provide civic‑focused instruction through videos, web and print materials, teacher professional development, and free community classes in all five boroughs.

About the opportunity

This program provides in‑person English classes for new New Yorkers. Classes are hosted at community organizations, schools, and shelters across the city.

Volunteers will use the We Speak NYC curriculum which provides civic‑focused multimedia resources created to empower adult immigrants through learning and practicing everyday English.

The curriculum centers on an Emmy‑Award winning educational drama series that informs learners about important New York City resources. The episodes address issues that most concern immigrants and asylum seekers such as health care, democracy, education, immigration legal help, elder care, and managing finances.

Previous teaching experience is welcomed but not required!

Tasks & responsibilities
  • Attend and complete a 2‑hour virtual training session, preparing you to lead conversation classes using our pedagogy and materials.
  • Complete a 1‑hour sexual harassment prevention training once per year.
  • Be available to lead an in‑person conversation class at a time and/or location you choose for 2 hours, once a week, for 8 weeks.
    * Please ensure you will be able to fully commit to the class schedule you chose for the entire duration of the cycle.
  • Engage with the WSNYC team throughout the duration of the cycle, including participation in facilitator check‑ins, class observation(s), short phone calls and completing a post‑cycle survey.
