Position Summary
The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and the College of Engineering at The University of Alabama invite applications for a tenure‑track position at the rank of Associate Professor. Candidates with a research emphasis in solidification science and metal casting are strongly encouraged.
Detailed Position Information
We invite applications for tenure‑track positions at all ranks, including Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor levels, within MTE. This posting is specific to the Associate Professor rank. Candidates with a strong record of scholarly productivity and impact are desired. Exceptional national and international reputation may qualify for an Endowed Shelby Distinguished Professor appointment. Candidates should indicate interest in this appointment in the cover letter.
The department offers a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering and has graduate programs. Candidates must demonstrate potential to develop a highly productive research group, collaborate with faculty, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses supporting our core programs.
Minimum Qualifications
• Earned Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
• Demonstrated record of research work and impactful scholarly publications in refereed journals and conferences.
• Demonstrated record in metallurgical engineering, materials science, and/or materials science education and professional service in areas of specialization.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to construct and sustain a quality research program.
• Exhibit excellent teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Applicants must also meet all university criteria for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor.
Preferred Qualifications
• Record of high‑quality research and scholarly publications recognized nationally and/or internationally, particularly in metal casting and solidification science.
• Significant record of scholarship in metallurgical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field with both undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
• Exceptional collegial, interpersonal, and mentoring skills.
Application Materials
Required application documents include: (1) cover letter stating department name and rank, (2) resume/CV, (3) 4–6 page statement of research interests and plans, (4) 1–2 page statement of teaching interests and plans, and (5) names and contact information for at least four references.
Final date to receive applications
Applications are preferred on or before October 20, 2025, but the search will continue until the positions are filled. Typical start date August 16, 2026.
