Join to apply for the Broadway Spotlight Teaching Artist (Writing, Theater or Dance) - Per Diem role at 92nd Street Y

The Broadway Spotlight Teaching Artist supports 92NY School Engagement in the Arts by leading high-quality, in‑school arts instruction for NYC public high school classrooms as part of the 2026 Broadway Spotlight Program.

Teaching Artists lead eight (8) dynamic, in‑school classroom sessions per assigned class, immersing students in an active, hands‑on exploration of the featured Broadway musical Hell’s Kitchen and Juliet through one of three disciplinary lenses—writing, theater, or dance.

This role centers on delivering an exploration into the world of Broadway within a classroom‑ready framework, fostering student creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Teaching Artists engage students in analyzing live theater experiences and support them in applying those insights to their own creative work, culminating in student‑created writing samples, scenes, or performances that reflect learning and artistic growth.

Teaching Artists collaborate with 92NY staff, classroom teachers, and school partners to ensure instruction is rigorous, accessible, and responsive to the needs of NYC public school classrooms.

Cover letter must clearly indicate the discipline for which you are applying — Writing, Theater, or Dance.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver eight engaging, student‑centered lessons per participating class (typically 1–2 classes per visit, 45 minutes each).
  • Lessons take place during school hours (8:00 AM–2:30 PM) between February and May 2026.
  • Partner schools are located across Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan.
  • Mandatory curriculum training with 92NY staff will be held in January 2026.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and inspiring learning environment that encourages participation, creativity, and joy in theater‑making.
  • Communicate weekly and proactively with 92NY staff and classroom teachers to ensure smooth program delivery and address successes and challenges.
  • Arrive punctually and fully prepared for each school visit.
  • Document each class through photos and student testimonials, in alignment with program guidelines.
  • Represent 92NY and the School Engagement Department with professionalism, warmth, and enthusiasm.
  • Attend all required trainings, meetings, and professional development sessions.
  • Maintain open, consistent communication with program staff—seeking support when needed and contributing to a collaborative teaching community.
Qualifications
  • 3–5 years of experience teaching in public school classroom settings; experience with Grades 9–12 strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and re‑engage large classroom groups with varied learning needs.
  • Commitment to inclusive, student‑centered instruction and fostering positive classroom culture.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and classroom management skills.
  • Experience implementing culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogy.
  • Interest in working within a pre‑developed curriculum for the ELA/Writing and Theater tracks;
    Dance tracks are Teaching Artist‑led.
  • Strong understanding of musical theater, with specific knowledge of contemporary Broadway productions.
  • Pre‑existing fingerprint clearance through the NYC and New York State Departments of Education preferred.
  • Spanish proficiency a plus.
  • Experience working with MLLs (multi-language learners) and students with disabilities a plus.
Application Instructions

Interested applicants should forward a resume and a cover letter. Due to a high volume of applications we are only able to contact those applicants whose experience most aligns with the position profile.

Compensation

Per‑Diem: $110 per class session. Teaching Artists are also compensated for participation in curriculum meetings with 92NY and planning meetings with school staff.
