FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT Position Details

The Art Department invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Painting, Drawing, and Foundations, to start in Fall 2026. We are seeking candidates qualified to teach painting and drawing courses ranging from undergraduate foundational to graduate level. The ideal candidate will help expand current understandings of the discipline, challenge traditional art curricula and teaching approaches, and contribute to the school's vision by bringing a unique perspective and a diverse set of experiences that enrich intellectual discussions and material practices.

Painting, Drawing, and Foundations is a core area of the Art Department, designed to support art majors and students from across the college community in developing essential skills while encouraging conceptual thinking about art‑making. Currently, we offer undergraduate courses within the Department’s BA program, and we are looking for an innovative artist to collaborate on a contemporary revision of the curriculum as we develop a BFA in Studio Art.

Core

  • Conducting ongoing professional creative research.

  • Teaching and advising graduate students.

  • Instructing undergraduate courses from beginner to advanced levels.

  • Actively participate in administrative operations, which include departmental and university committees, student recruitment, assessment activities, and serve in leadership departmental governance positions, including the rotating leadership for the Art Department and Studio Art programs.

The Art Department is part of the Division of Humanities and the Arts at The City College of New York (CCNY). We have over 750 undergraduate majors and minors in art and offer graduate programs in Studio Art, Digital and Interdisciplinary Art Practice, Art History and Art Museum Studies, and Art Education. CCNY serves a large population of first‑generation students. Our current student body represents 153 countries, and ninety‑nine languages are spoken on campus.

In the Art Department, we strive to nurture this diversity within our community of engaged artists, scholars, and educators. Our department fosters innovative art practices, insightful scholarship, and progressive teaching methods. We aim to reimagine our curricula and classroom approaches to better meet the needs of CCNY’s student population. Faculty members in the Art Department collaborate in making curricular decisions, overseeing departmental governance, managing essential administration, and supporting students throughout their college experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

An MFA in Art or equivalent is required, as well as an active practice with a record of professional accomplishments and exhibitions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of a variety of approaches and techniques in 2D art making and a proficiency in contemporary art theory and art history.

  • Candidates are preferred to have at least two years of successful teaching experience in painting, drawing, and/or 2D foundations, as well as mentoring students, especially first‑generation college students.

  • Additionally, candidates should have experience with administrative skills and academic program development. We welcome applications from artists with alternative and interdisciplinary practices in painting.
