The CUNY Graduate Center invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a required start date of August 2026. We seek outstanding scientists with a strong publication record, and significant research experience in the field of modern theoretical and computational quantum physics, defined to include many‑body physics, quantum field theory, material science, light‑matter interacting systems and quantum information.

Responsibilities include research, teaching, mentoring, and service. The candidate is expected to generate an active, externally funded research program using the resources of Empire AI, and to participate in graduate teaching and research training. Teaching duties may include courses in computational methods and advanced courses in areas of specialist interest. The appointment will be in the Ph.D. Program in Physics.

Applicants must also apply to the Visiting Scholar position in the Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ) posted on the Flatiron Institute’s website at  The Visiting Scholar position will run for the full duration of the assistant professor position, i.e. up to tenure, with satisfactory completion of CUNY and CCQ reviews. This Visiting Scholar position to perform research at CCQ with a 50% release from teaching responsibilities, and additional payment from the Flatiron Institute as an independent contractor.

At the end the Visiting Scholar appointment, the faculty member will remain on the CUNY faculty pending a successful tenure decision.

We seek applications from collaborative individuals with research interests in modern theoretical and computational quantum physics, defined to include many‑body physics, quantum field theory, material science, light‑matter interacting systems and quantum information that are synergistic with the research being performed at the Flatiron Institute’s Center for Computational Quantum Physics. Preferred qualifications include a strong publication and funding record, innovative research, and a commitment to mentoring students at the graduate level.

It is expected that the successful applicant will be involved in research mentoring at the graduate level.

Applications to both positions are required, and it is acceptable to submit identical applications to both. However, applicants are welcome to comment on specific synergies with CCQ in their cover letter for the Flatiron application.
