Lecturer - Physical Education
Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in Physical Education (K-12) in the Department of Secondary Education (SEED). This is a full-time appointment in the Lecturer rank which can lead to a Certificate of Continuous Employment (CCE) [equivalent to tenure], beginning August 2026.
The SEED Department’s teacher preparation programs are grounded in collaboration, critical self-reflection, reflective practice, diversity, and urban school reform. Guided by a social justice framework, our programs aim to improve the quality of classroom practice in secondary schools while advocating for youth, families, and policies that support effective, equitable, and transformative teaching and learning.
SEED programs integrate deep content knowledge-in English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Science, and Physical Education-with practical field experiences and a foundational study of adolescent development, learning theory, and pedagogy. We support the growth of educators who are dedicated to creating classrooms where all students can flourish and succeed.
Our faculty engage in teaching, program development, and community partnerships in ways that reflect our mission to effect positive outcomes for students, educators, and communities.
Responsibilities- Teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses in K-12 Physical Education, including methods of teaching physical education, assessment, adapted physical activity, and supervision of student teaching or field experiences.
- Supervising students in K-12 field placements and student-teaching experiences, including mentoring, observing, and evaluating teacher-candidates.
- Advising and mentoring students on academic planning, professional development, and New York State certification requirements in Physical Education.
- Participating in curriculum and program development, accreditation (State and regional), and ongoing program assessment.
- Collaborating with school and community partners to sustain and strengthen relationships with urban K-12 schools.
- Engaging in department, school, and college service.
- Demonstrating a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging through teaching, mentoring, and service.
- Contributing to program growth, recruitment, and retention of students in Physical Education.
Lecturers at Brooklyn College are contracted for 24 contact hours (teaching and/or observations and program coordination) per academic year. The successful candidate can expect to typically teach at least 3 classes per semester and to participate in departmental service, student advising, and program coordination.
Teaching ModalityThe successful candidate will teach primarily in person on the Brooklyn College campus, with occasional hybrid or online assignments as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS Minimum- Master’s degree in Physical Education or a closely related field (e.g., Kinesiology) from an accredited institution.
- Expertise in K-12 Physical Education.
- Demonstrated expertise in program development and administration.
- Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate Physical Education classes.
- Demonstrated experience in K-12 Physical Education settings.
- A commitment to career-oriented learning.
- Experience supporting diverse and historically marginalized student populations through culturally sustaining and inclusive pedagogies.
- Experience supervising student teachers and/or teacher-candidates in K-12 Physical Education programs.
- Second Masters or Advanced degree (e.g., Ed.D., Ph.D., or equivalent) in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or a related field.
- Teaching experience in K-12 Physical Education settings.
- Experience with curriculum design, assessment, or accreditation processes in Physical Education teacher preparation.
- Professional certifications relevant to Physical Education or Adapted Physical Activity.
- Record of service to the profession (e.g. in state/national Physical Education associations or involvement in SHAPE America, NYS/NJ AHPERD).
