Family Life Academy Charter School (FLACS) is a nonprofit network of high‑performing charter schools in the South Bronx. FLACS partners with the Latino Pastoral Action Center and parents to create conditions for student empowerment, academic excellence, and community engagement.

Position overview: Under the supervision of the principal, the ENL teacher provides legally mandated services to identified English Language Learners and students requiring at‑risk interventions. The teacher pulls out small groups, works collaboratively in a team model with general educators, provides specialized instruction to ensure progress in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and supports students’ access to the FLACS high‑school curriculum aligned to NY State Next Generation Learning Standards.

The teacher works with administrators to implement procedures, policies, and communicates with parents, guardians, and caregivers.

Key responsibilities:

  • Creates academically rigorous, standards‑based, culturally relevant lesson plans that foster critical thinking and problem‑solving, providing scaffolds for students learning English.
  • Utilizes student‑centered instructional strategies, engages students, and differentiates teaching based on individual needs.
  • Co‑plans and co‑teaches with general education teachers.
  • Analyzes data from formative and summative assessments to refine instruction and improve student achievement.
  • Maintains strong classroom management, implementing school‑wide policies for a safe, caring, orderly environment.
  • Establishes a classroom culture of caring, respect, and rapport, holding students to high academic standards and fostering inclusion.
  • Grades student work, provides actionable feedback, and promptly records grades in online systems.
  • Actively knows students’ strengths and challenge areas, communicating effectively with families via online portals, report cards, and other means.
  • Participates in professional development, professional learning communities, grade‑level activities, and school‑wide functions.
  • Shares best practices with colleagues via professional learning communities, grade‑level or content teams, and cross‑school groups.
  • Manages regulatory and instructional requirements as an ENL teacher.
  • Administers Home Language Questionnaires and NYSITELL to determine student eligibility for ENL services.
  • Administers NYSESLAT test annually.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Prior satisfactory teaching experience preferred.
  • New York State Teaching Certification in English to Speakers of Other Languages (all grades).
  • Clearance for fingerprint and criminal background check.
