About BEAM

The mission of BEAM is to create pathways for students from low‑income and underserved communities to become scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists. Led by staff with these same technical backgrounds, BEAM believes that pathways to STEM careers are created through community, individual support, and access to advanced work that typically lies outside most school curricula. We work to directly support students and transition them to other enrichment programs that enable their future success.

ASSOCIATE

SITE DIRECTOR, BEAM DISCOVERY

Join the BEAM team this summer and make a difference! We are seeking passionate leaders to serve as Associate Site Directors for our Discovery summer programs in New York City or Los Angeles. This role is more than a summer position – it is an opportunity to lead, mentor, and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.

We immerse students in deep mathematical experiences through rigorous summer programs and challenging year‑round activities, provide academic support, mentorship, and advising, and prepare them for collegiate studies in STEM disciplines.

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Pre‑Program Preparation
  • Complete required BEAM onboarding, including background checks and a mix of asynchronous and synchronous virtual training.
  • Read and internalize the BEAM Leadership Handbook and create a site‑specific Leadership Handbook with customizations.
  • Participate in virtual meetings with the Leadership Team and BEAM full‑time staff to prepare for “Pre‑camp Week.”
  • Plan the content, staff training, and schedule for Pre‑camp Week and the Leadership Retreat.
  • Communicate with students’ parents and caregivers about camp start and travel logistics.
  • Support final selection of the site leadership team (if needed).
  • New York only:
    Attend the New York State Department of Health’s Summer Camp Operator Orientation and obtain necessary health and safety certifications.
Pre‑Camp Week Training and Set‑Up
  • Leadership Retreat:
    Align on roles, responsibilities, site‑specific operational policies, working norms, and team‑building activities.
  • All‑Staff Pre-Camp Training:
    Facilitate team‑building, role‑specific training, and prepare facilities for staff and student arrival.
  • Confirm staff completion of required HR onboarding and obtain necessary signatures.
During Camp
  • Site Leadership – Liaise with campus staff, manage vendors and contractors, and ensure compliance with campus regulations.
  • Staff Leadership – Conduct daily check‑ins, communicate updates, adapt policies, resolve conflicts, and track assessments.
  • Community Leadership – Oversee student travel logistics, campus safety, and behavior situations.
  • Follow crisis plans and provide leadership during emergencies.
  • Coordinate logistical tasks: petty cash, transportation tickets, field trips, staff dinners, math circles, and Open Math Time.
Post Camp Wrap‑Up
  • Support Site Leadership in cleaning up and completing check‑lists.
  • Complete staff evaluations and one‑on‑one debriefs.
  • Update BEAM storage inventory and coordinate packing and pick‑up.
  • Attend the BEAM‑led multi‑site Summer Camp step‑back meeting.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Leadership Skills – experience managing teams and fostering collaboration.
  • Commitment to Equity – passion for inclusive classrooms.
  • Communication Skills – strong written and verbal interaction with staff, students, and families.
  • Problem‑Solving – ability to manage conflicts and make timely decisions.
  • Organizational Skills – manage multiple tasks and schedules simultaneously.
  • Data Proficiency – work with spreadsheets and formulas.
  • Adaptability – adjust plans based on feedback and evolving needs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior work experience with middle school students.
  • Prior experience with students in LA or NYC public schools or comparable backgrounds.
