Academic Advising Director - HEO

The City College of New York, a senior college of The City University of New York (CUNY), seeks a strategic, collaborative, and experienced Academic Program Director to lead and coordinate academic advising practices across its schools and divisions. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Enrollment Management, the Academic Program Director will play a central role in shaping and implementing strategies that enhance student onboarding, engagement, retention, and degree completion.

This position will serve as a key leader and strategic partner in the development and implementation of a more cohesive and student-centered advising experience across the academic campus. Working in close collaboration with academic advising units, divisional leadership, and professional advisors, the Academic Program Director will help build an integrated, institution-wide advising model that prioritizes student success, belonging, and timely degree completion.

The role emphasizes collaboration, standardization of practices, and coordinated support, ensuring that students receive consistent guidance regardless of division, major, or advising unit.

Campus-specific Information and Duties
  • Lead and coordinate academic advising across all schools and divisions at City College.
  • Develop and deliver professional development for advisors and student success personnel.
  • Standardize advising practices across divisions to ensure consistent, student-centered support.
  • Convene and facilitate regular meetings of divisional and school-based advisors to share best practices and align strategies.
  • Partner with advisors to expand usage of campus-wide resources (e.g., Career Services, Counseling, Student Affairs, Learning & Tutoring Centers, Accessibility Services) to address academic and non-academic barriers to success.
  • Serve as a leader in college-wide retention and persistence initiatives, aligning advising practices with broader institutional strategies for student success.
  • Collaborate with institutional research and enrollment management to analyze student retention data and implement targeted interventions.
  • Support the transition of undeclared students by coordinating advising and programming that guides major exploration and academic planning.
  • Co-lead the New Student Onboarding meetings and work closely with enrollment services, student affairs, and academic departments to ensure seamless onboarding for new students.
  • Collaborate with student support units to integrate advising into orientation and first-year programming.
  • Serve as the central point of contact and project lead for EAB Navigate, ensuring full utilization, effective training, and consistent campus-wide adoption.
  • Use analytics and reports from EAB Navigate and institutional data sources to assess advising impact and inform continuous improvement.
  • Develop policy recommendations to improve the student advising experience and support institutional student success goals.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to advising units, and, where appropriate, supervise professional staff.
  • Represent the college on university-wide committees and initiatives related to advising, onboarding, and student success.
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, or a related field.
  • At least five years of experience in academic advising or student success roles in higher education.
  • Demonstrated leadership in cross-campus collaboration or coordination.
  • Experience with student success platforms, preferably Degree Works and EAB Navigate, including training and user engagement.
  • Strong understanding of onboarding, advising, and retention strategies for diverse student populations.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and project management skills.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring professional staff is a plus.
