Within the larger scope of formal and informal education provided by the Programs & Services Department’s (PSD) Adult Learning unit, the Assistant Adult Education Manager reports to and supports Adult Education Manager (s) in providing high quality and effective adult education services to Queens Public Library customers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Within the larger scope of formal and informal education provided by the Programs & Services Department’s (PSD) Adult Learning unit, the Assistant Adult Education Manager reports to and supports Adult Education Manager (s) in providing high quality and effective adult education services to Queens Public Library customers.
- Assists in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Adult Learning Center and provides standard operational guidance to Center staff and volunteers.
- Supports maintenance and enhancement of program quality based on enrollment, retention, measurable skills gains, credential attainment and other Library and funder criteria.
- Ensures adherence to Library, Adult Learning Center and other applicable policies and procedures and coordinates operations with community library staff as needed.
- Supports the timely and accurate collection, entry, maintenance, reporting and distribution of Center data, including adherence to program standards and government contract reporting and proper and timely processing of all documents and other required paperwork.
- Supports comprehensive assessment and outcome tracking.
- Prepares and oversees program reports as needed and required.
- Conducts and/or supports timely pre and post-testing.
- Teaches ESOL, ABE or HSE classes.
- Regularly observes classes and conducts teacher evaluations to ensure high quality.
- Supports curriculum development and lesson planning.
- Ensures staff and volunteers are using up-to-date curriculum, instructional strategies and technology to develop and deliver high quality and effective educational programs and service.
- Oversees GED registration.
- Oversees manual follow-up as required by funder and Library.
- Assists Adult Education Manager in monitoring performance of staff members, including evaluation of measurement criteria for major job responsibilities and strategic initiatives.
- Hires hourly rate staff and participates in the hiring process for full-time staff.
- Arranges and participates in staff development and training programs.
- Assists in creating staff schedules based on semester calendars, Center priorities and community needs.
- Effectively communicates departmental and library information to staff so they can serve customers.
- Recruits and trains volunteers and interns in Library, Adult Learning and Center program standards, operations and best practices.
- Conducts extensive outreach within the Library and to the community to ensure enrollment and retention targets are met.
- Oversees the intake process, including assessment and enrollment in services.
- Supports the Adult Learning Center in working with other Library departments to market and promote Adult Education Center classes, programs and other services.
- Works closely with Case Managers to address customers’ barriers to success.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
The schedule for this position includes Saturdays and evenings as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field required.
- Minimum of one year of experience supervising staff required.
- Minimum of four years of education/instruction experience required.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and other productivity tools.
- Must have strong organizational and management skills and ability to multi-task and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must have a passion for public libraries and providing community-based services.

This is a union position, represented by District Council 37. The starting annual salary is $66,622.
