The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative educator to serve as a Maternity Leave Middle School Class 4 Mathematics Teacher and Advisor for January, 2027-April, 2027.

Job Overview

The Maternity Leave Middle School Mathematics Teacher reports to the Head of Middle School and will teach four sections of math and serve as an advisor in Middle School, grade 4 from January through approximately April 2027. This teacher will also serve as an advisor. This position necessitates a thorough understanding of Middle School children as well as a desire to work with and advocate for them.

Our next Middle School Mathematics Teacher will design a classroom environment where students work collaboratively to discover the beauty, interdisciplinarity, and myriad applications of mathematics; construct their understanding of rich concepts and complex algorithms; explain their thinking through daily discourse and writing; engage in frequent, purposeful practice needed to achieve fluency;

and cultivate the skills of critical thinking and problem solving as they embrace challenges relevant to the world around them.

A mathematician who demonstrates a commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary curriculum development who:

  • Believes in and has experience teaching an integrated, inquiry-based curriculum.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues to prepare, implement, and document appropriate lesson plans that meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
  • Embodies the joy of learning and exploration by sharing their passion and enthusiasm for mathematics with students.
  • Designs and implements high quality, engaging learning experiences built around intellectual exploration and joyful discovery.
  • Identifies and facilitates interdisciplinary opportunities between the Math and other subject curriculum.
  • Uses diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment data to inform teaching and learning and set individual student goals.
  • Incorporates real-world applications and problem-solving opportunities to help students connect mathematical concepts to everyday life and global issues.
